I saw it for the first time recently. It was alright, and I do enjoy eighties horror films a lot, but there was nothing that special about it. There also seemed to be some obvious plot holes.

Excellent eighties horror films are things like Videodrome, Prince of Darkness, and maybe Nightmare on Elm Street (although really, that was just pretty good).

The comic books were considered unique and disturbing for their time

I like how it was a half horror and half romance movie

It had some cool lore that got more delved into in the sequel. Every other movie after 2 is trash though since Clive Barker isn't involved anymore.

Clive Barker being so heavily involved and The Hellbound Heart being popular were probably major factors.

I'm not much of a movie guy so I've never seen Hellraiser. But I've read a bunch of Clive Barker's stuff and it's really good.

Hellraiser is my favorite horror film. For me it's really about the atmosphere. Everything feels so dirty and gross, it feels disturbing in a way that movies now really aren't.

Like I look at Saw, which puts characters in nasty environments, but it still feels like a movie set that a production designer created.

I also saw it this last year for the first time and thought it was "just ok." The design of Pinhead is obviously very iconic, but otherwise it's pretty run of the mill.

It's got some cool monsters and the story is pretty atypical of the genre, but I still don't really think it's anything special myself.
