They legally could have shown his stuff on Netflix and be perfectly in the right since he signed a contract. Netflix also knows he wont stick around even under contract if hes unhappy. They weren't under obligation to take it down they did it because they thought it was the morally right thing to do. They probably still have the rights they bought.
