Should I?

Over the past while I've realized I fucking hate my job and its actively holding me back from making any progress in my life. I work 8:30pm-5am which makes it difficult to get a stable sleep schedule to go out and look for another job/do things during the day, and night shift is always fucked over with no compensation. There have been numerous times this week I've had to do the work of multiple people with 0 appreciation or compensation. Upper management has made a series of decisions that have contributed to instability in the work place (can't hire enough people to fill in their new times). If I made more than barely above min wage I'd grit my teeth and bear it for job security, but literally every day I either want to put in my 2 weeks notice, quit on the spot, or blow my brains out over the line (MODS: not suicidal! Being hyperbolic).

Biggest problem that comes with quitting sooner than getting a new job first is paying rent. I can do it this month and if the stimmies come through I'll float through April. But I don't feel very motivated atm to look with all the additional stress.

Its a long time coming and I plan on quitting within the next few months anyways, but my mental health is taking a considerable nosedive and it feels like I'm setting myself on fire staying instead of taking action.

CE, should I keep on trucking and deal with it. Or make the hard decision? Fortunately, my bosses are desperate enough that they'll hire me back on if I come back no questions asked.

I'd never quit a job without a plan put in place for a new one, but if it's significantly crippling your mental health than it might be worth considering.

My "plan" is that literally every other fast food/retail place is hiring and my resume will put me at the top of any interview list lmao

I know you said it's difficult to find another job, but I think you should try push through the job hunting while still employed, however hard it may be. A month isn't a long time to find a job, and even if your bosses would take you back, your life would probably be even more of a living hell.

Eh... I probably would have when I was younger, but now? I don't know, you have a month's rent if you don't have an emergency. That said, in most places it takes at least a month to evict, and no landlord wants to find new renters if they don't have to.

I've tried to do that, and so far haven't been able to muster the motivation. I think I have to force my own hand. Also my bosses won't make my life any more hell than they've already made it. They'll be desperate to take me back if anything.

They simply don't pay me enough to save any more. My best bet for money is going back to school and getting a grant/loan, and quitting this job will give me a nice buffer to work on that.

Start lining something else up. Dont worry about performing well at the current job. If they fire you, at least you get unemployment.

Line up something first.

I've worked night shift. I'm very aware of the issues of getting into a consistent sleep rhythm, but figure something out. Set some alarms and force yourself to get some job searching done. You don't care much about your job so nbd if you're tired for that.

At least try to look for something first before putting in notice, but don't quit without a plan or good buffer. Unless the job is actively killing you physically, mentally and emotionally, put on your big boy pants and tough it out. It could be worse.

personally, I would quit when I have another job lined up with the offer confirmed. Meaning that I would be job hunting and getting interviews and calling sick for them.

you are in a bit of a predicament. I've had that grave shift job too 9 years ago, and I absolutely hated it, especially with the days alternating every week, so it was impossible to go to school, and it ruined my sleep and well being. But, I didn't have to worry about rent.

so now it just goes to the whole rent thing. you have 1-2 months saved. can you also go back to your parents temporarily if you can't pay, as a fall back? if the latter, so absolutely quit and put your two weeks in person. otherwise, maybe stick through it, while applying for jobs and getting those interviews. up to you really. if it's really fucking you up physically, mentally, and preventing you from doing what you want to do from further advancing your career/school, than quit. but think about your financial situation too

Call up a temp agency, if one doesn't have anything for you right now then go to the next one in line. I've quit multiple jobs with nothing lined up, and never ended up homeless because if you can walk into the temp agency office, they'll probably get you something. Anybody who's worked somewhere that employs a lot of temps can attest that if their standards for people were any lower, you'd need an excavator to find them.

i would try to hold out another week and start to grind through putting in apps and doing interviews. fill out apps on indeed and wherever else. most of it is online so just try to grind a bunch out. if you're open to any job even another min wage job just so you can work days/afternoons then shouldn't be too hard to find something. just apply everywhere so you can still have an income and then can always look for something better. never settle till you're happy.

but yea after a week if your mental health is still horrible then i would quit. especially if you already have a few interviews planned. have parents or someone who might be able to borrow you some money for bills for worst case? you can cancel a lot to save money but at least need rent, water, electric, cell. ramen and cheap stuff to eat. just if you do quit try to be real stingy with your money. no spending a lot on takeout or anything expensive from the store. PB&J and grilled cheese goes a long way. but hopefully you'll have something lined up within a few weeks.

i work for USPS at the distribution center and been there over 4 years now but when i first started i was on midnights for the first 1-1.5 years and hated it. most of the time working 6 days a week and 10-12 hours a day. so i'd start at 10:30pm and get off at 9-11am besides for like a 2 month span they had us only doing 40 hours a week. that shit was miserable and i got depressed a lot. definitely made me wanna quit but made decent enough money that wasn't an option. finally had something i could turn into a career but now i'm back in school and trying to get something better.

a lot of people do like their jobs. if you have good pay, good benefits and good management, and you are in a field that your are passionate about (and has growth), you will like your job. but you will have work your ass for it to get there of course.

TC, you sound like me except I have a decent job and make around $65k a year. My wife constantly tells me to get a new job in my career field before quitting, and Id say apply the same mentality here. We could live off her salary, so obviously youre in a worse position. I hate my job with a passion though, and often get snippy with people at work because theyre not educated and been doing it shorter but all with this company, so they make more and get to make their own schedule. Even though I perform better and get recognized often, due to a union Im screwed for eternity with this company.

Also to someone that said otherwise: My wife loves her career and just doesnt understand the drain.

Unfortunately, its hard to give up $65k+ where we live unless I drive an hour to Chicago. What I got my degree in Id basically have to go back to entry level pay taking a $10-20k hit unless I demanded the same as what I make now. That isnt easy when you havent done that exact work in 6 years.

I appreciate all the advice. I ended up waiting a day before turning it in, but gave it to my manager today. The office isn't open til Tuesday and I'm sure they'll try to talk me out of it, but at least I have the relief of finally doing the action I've been needing to take.

Monday I'm gonna start sending out applications, update my Indeed, etc. . My coworkers are making me confident I'll find something so that energy is definitely gonna motivate me.

Feels like a weight off my shoulder. Reality hasn't set in, I'm still working through the end of the month (worst case they'll delay me til April). I 100% understand the whole "line something up first" excuse, but my mental health is getting to a breaking point where I need to take a risk. I do have a fallback, but that includes potentially screwing my roommate and I'm not really including that in any plans. The plan is to absolutely have a job in April.

Find a new job first and then quit.
If you quit now with no job, you'll struggle to make ends meet as you don't know for sure how long it'll take you to find another job especially during the coronavirus where many employers are constantly downsizing especially in retail or fast food industries affected by the coronavirus or the temporary heroes pay.

Talked to my AGM who shares similar sentiments about our company and knows a little more of the inner workings. Looks like I might put myself at a negotiation table for a raise. Honestly, if I can grab a little extra money and bail in a couple months when I have a job lined up, that's way better than where I'm at right now. I can argue my case, just gotta figure out how much to ask for.

The problem is I want to go back to school in fall and finish college. I can get a better paying job, but those ones are less willing to work with a school schedule. If I can get out of retail/fast food I will, but at this point I just need income.

It depends on how you really feel. Don't be stupid about it. Rushing into something else if you are feeling burnt is not good. I had to do that because of circumstances and it's not smart. Had I known better at the time I wouldn't have and was trying not too. Don't let people lead you in the wrong direction either.

I set out a goal for myself, and unfortunately that goal requires a Master's degree minimum. It's not really about the money, I can live on minimum wage. I just need a job to pay rent/bills while I go to school, where financial aid and other opportunities can cover the rest.

This post made me feel sorry for you man, due to the fucked up circumstances it requires and the contradiction of the situation. You said you can live on min wage and its not about the money, but then follow it up with having to cover the rest by financial aid and its definitely going to be about the money for years.

I mean its only about the money as far as its always about money. I just don't need something high paying right now that would demand more of my free time. My future career path is lofty enough I don't mind scraping for a few months.
