Saw someone post this on 4chan. I very much agree and think it prevents me from trying new things.

What do you mean by mediocre? Working enough to earn a decent living with no more ambition then that?

So your dream is to be more than mediocre, but what is the standard for mediocreMy standard for mediocre is basically most things/statuses Like if I'm not top 100 computer scientists and never will be, why even bother? If I can't code crazy shit that no one else can what is the point? Someone else will just do it better if my mediocre self even bothers, if it hasnt already been done to a standard I can't surpass I've invested 10+ years into a few things and plateaued with every single one, not being good enough to really accomplish anything People know what success is when they see it, and historically my efforts are rarely met with success. I dont try hard enough I guess, but it makes more sense to say the effort I do put into things is the upper limit of what I can do. It's just frustrated being so fucking limited --- "Why is ontology so expensive?" - JH [Is this live?][Joyless planet...] ... Copied to Clipboard!

It depends on the person, but I'd say in some cases certainly, especially if the thing in question has some fringe benefit (fun, stress relief, distraction etc.) or inherent value to you
In itself the act of trying to excel at something can also be fulfilling imo And you also don't necessarily know what your ceiling is until you try the thing, and even then there might points of struggle that appear falsely to you as a plateau when really it's really just a normal part of the process. There are plenty of people who've only reached their peak at a thing later in life too --- The fully enlightened earth radiates disaster triumphant ... Copied to Clipboard!
