i always somewhat like weapon durability but they aways does boring stuff to just impede the players.
i have an imaginary design of fantasy ARPG in which there is a "curse" setting each time a weapon you use kill something.

the world has several races (including monsters) as enemy types, both killable NPCs and monsters belong in their category
each time you kill something, it increases the numbers, after a certain treshold, it activate a curse that will give players a debuff and buff. for example killing humans NPCs or enemies will increase human blood meter, after certain treshold your weapon gain a curse from soaking so much human blood. i generally dislike numbers based progression so let's say gaining a cursed weapon gives you active ability that can kill more humans easier, like blood magic spell that only affect humans, but also reduce the weapon's stat or make it less effective against other enemy types et cetera.

you can also purify cursed weapons at a costs like in dragon quest to remove curse effects.

so instead of impeding the players durability mehcanics will be tied into the game's lore and gives you new stuff to play with but also came at a cost.

That sounds neat. Then you'd at least want to use as many weapons as there are curses so you always have one ready for any situation. You wouldn't use the same weapon through the whole game like when there's no degradation, but your faves would still be viable after a lot of use.

I'm sorry, but 10,000 of ANYTHING on a PS2 would absolutely destroy your framerate. It'd be like playing chess through the mail. ~johnboy1

yup, that's what i am thinking too. it can be used to your advantage by having special weapon intended to be used against different enemy. i am thinking several special weapon take this curse effect to be bound to you (aka cannot be unnequipped) and have to be purified, but that doesn't happen to ALL of them, just few select, but the bound weapon offer more buff than regular cursed weapons.
