It functions like any currency trade as a zero sum game. Like let's say we are talking US Dollars and Japanese Yen for a second. No one would say I am investing in dollars or yen. But if you want to profit off it you need to buy dollars for yen when yen is high and sell them when it's the opposite. In doing this someone had to take a loss because you need buyers and sellers. Crypto works the same way. You trade USD for say Bitcoin. If you profit someone else lost.
