Imagine if Dark Souls patented the bonfire system or Capcom patented combos back when SF2 came out. Games are always taking from others and putting their own spin on it

You can't. This has been settled in court years ago you cannot patent or copyright game rules or mechanics.

You can patent/copyright/trademark proper nouns related to your game rules if you want but that's different.

I think you need to have the mind of a roleplayer for it to be particularly interesting. I honestly couldn't tell you a single significant encounter in that game. They're just all the same archetypes with a few particular variations each. As in-game AI learning gets better, it could become an absolutely fantastic gimmick, but it's currently up to the imagination of the player.

There's an exception for game mechanics that are themselves an invention as well as generic software patents. I'd have to see the application to figure it out but seeing as minigames are themselves not an invention and neither are loading screens it would seem unlikely to hold up to a strong challenge.

Something like the Dreamcast VMUs would have a stronger legal basis for patents.

They don't. Lots of games have come out with sanity mechanics since eternal darkness. One of the more famous ones was Amnesia: The Dark Descent
