You should read a good chunk of the philosophical canon available, see what's out there, and develop your ideas that may iterate, extrapolate, or go counter to existing material.

My philosophy professors taught me the true art of the discipline is the art of reading welll. The way in is learning what is already. Most of the great philosophers spend a significant amount of effort on reviewing and critiquing existing systems before fully outlining their own. The way in is through the existing material.

I have read so much but even still it's hard to organize everything neatly enough that you can make use of stuff. I also waste a lot of time rereading since I don't understand everything

It would be nice if I could catch a thread of something interesting so I'd know what to read from there
