An NHS worker was left distressed and humiliated after a neighbour who had been tormenting her for weeks emptied a shopping bag full of his own faeces over her head as she went to work.

Josh Wade, 22, subjected the woman to a campaign of aggressive and unpleasant behaviour lasting more than two months, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

He spotted his victim leaving her home in Litherland shortly after 7am on October 1 last year and followed her down the road.

Wade grabbed the woman, who the court heard was clearly identifiable as an NHS worker, and slapped her in the face with a hand clutching the bag of excrement.

She was left with faeces smeared over her head and Wade was arrested when police arrived soon after. Judge Rachel Smith said: The effect upon her was instant and the victim personal statement element of her complaint sets out how distressing, humiliating and frightening she found the whole incident.

Wade had previously pleaded guilty to administering a noxious substance and possessing cannabis and was jailed for 14 months. He denied a charge of harassment that put a person in fear of violence, which alleged that he made threats to shoot the woman.

Prosecutors agreed to drop that charge on the basis his harassment was incorporated within the noxious substance allegation.

Defending, Lloyd Morgan told the court Wade expressed remorse in his police interview and recognised the effect his dreadful actions had upon his erstwhile neighbour. He added: He indicated as set out in his psychiatric report that he would apologise to her if given the opportunity.

His first taste of incarceration has had a significant effect upon him and a positive effect upon him as he is no longer taking drugs, hes rid himself of that terrible affliction which is the first time thats happened for a long period of time. Mr Morgan said Wade previously suffered from depression and was admitted as an inpatient to a psychiatric hospital when living in Western Australia for some time as a result of drug induced psychosis and other mental difficulties.

The lawyer said: In the cold hard light of day and free from the affliction of drugs, he recognises his appalling behaviour and wishes of course that it hadnt happened.

Judge Smith said: Against a lengthy campaign of harassment from August through to October of last year involving aggressive and unpleasant behaviour towards your neighbour, on October 1, you followed her outside of her home by running at her and gripping her and slapping her face with a hand in which you held a bag of your own faeces. She said reports confirmed Wade had a lengthy history of mental health issues, often compounded by or triggered by your drug use. Judge Smith went on: There was in your case of course an element of planning because you had to find a bag, defecate into it and then use it as a weapon. The judge said Wade had shown a desire to humiliate, demean and distress the victim

She added: Of course the repellent and unhygienic nature of the offence shows a desire to humiliate, demean and distress the victim. The judge said the victim described feeling unclean afterwards and added: Of course the adverse effects of being attacked with a bag of faeces speak for themselves.

Wade was also given a five-year restraining order which prevents him from contacting the victim. Judge Smith said it was regrettable that the restraining order would prevent Wade from returning to his former home, but the victim and her partner were entitled to be protected from him.

This is seriously one of my biggest phobias. If this happened to me I might've snapped and caused permanent injury. Yeah, yeah, I know internet tough guy but this is seriously one of my worst nightmares. Even thinking about it gives me severe anxiety.

I've always thought about using VR to help with phobias. I've looked up some VR vids about people dealing with spiders since I also have arachnophobia but it's not as severe as a situation like this.
