"Man I can't believe someone would suggest I am a tanky! Did you know China has a socialist economy characterized by the most billionaires and millionaires in the world, striking being illegal, forming your own labor union being illegal, renters forcing tenants to pay massive upfront nonrefundable payments and being able to kick out tenants at any time without recourse, and having to prepay for healthcare to receive treatment?"

Stop pretending to be socialist. Your shtick is getting old. It's the same tired tankie bullshit talking points over and over again. You give zero fucks about workers or equality, you just like the aesthetic and feeling like you belong to something powerful.

Again, I have no idea what or who you are responding to. My message was clear and idk where this weird rant is coming from tbh.

Should be higher.

close to $25 if wages had risen along with production, as they of course should

Against. I would prefer social programs instead of raising it. Workforces will just cut hours/people. Big business always wins.

I'm for. Highly doubt prices will go up that drastically.

It needs to be raised anyway. Especially since the cost of living and goods have continued to rise without an increase over the last decade. If they don't want to raise the minimum wage, then there needs to be a cap on rent based on the area and average incomes levels.

More so than the minimum wage, rent control is an idea that sounds good but is terrible in practice.

It will hurt the people you're trying to help.

do any of these "we can't raise the minimum wage because then prices will rise" people have any explanation for why prices rise anyway, even if wages don't? and if we can't raise wages, what's their plan for workers to continue to be able to afford the increased price of things?

such a pretend concern for the economy. they understand nothing beyond an individual level. the workers provide a demand for goods, what happens to that demand (& thus the economy) if they stop being able to afford to buy things?

you end up nearly defending capitalism to these people. they don't even get how the system they're defending is supposed to work

I think the idea of the government forcing business owners to deal with a problem of the government is crude at best.

Just give ubi, it's significantly better.

Firstly, it helps those who aren't working. While it does incentive not working, it's only a bit since you can still make a lot more by working.

But it'll also have much better effects. With ubi, since ppl don't need to work, businesses will be forced to not only pay better but create better working environments and be FAR less abusive to their employees since people can just walk out with little to no loss of livelihood.

Just raising minimum wage still gives all the power to businesses. They can still abuse and have stressful working conditions knowing that you have to work or lose your livelihood.

I don't even care if they got rid of min wage as long as we have ubi since no one would work for a low wage as long as they're supported by ubi. Like if a business said, "you'll only make $5 per hour" you can easily walk away and laugh.

The only question is how well the tax side of things works out - this would presumably need some pretty heavy taxes, which in turn is a further disincentive to working. If that can be resolved or isn't actually a problem, a UBI would certianly achieve far more than constant minimum wage increases - which tend to flow on to other costs and make the problem even worse, because while the people on minimum wage might have more money in terms of plain raw numbers, the buying power is the same or even less.

Rather than increasingly the minimum wage, why not just reduce the cost of living?
Do cars really need to be worth more $15k-30k? What about making homes more affordable to lower income citizens and so on???

I mean, same thing, no? When we say we want wages to rise all we mean is we want people to have a higher standard of living; for the average person to have a better life, better material conditions.
