I guess it's all dependent on your age. I was listening to a podcast the other day and someone who is mid to late 30's was saying how his kid called Avril Lavigne "Dad Rock"

Rolling Stones will always be the epitome of dad rock to me. But more recent examples are RHCP and Foo Fighters.

so dad rock is a pejorative term that evolves with time to mock what was immediately before for each new generation?

I can see kids 5 years from now going like bAd bUnNy iS dAd rOcK

I think that's how it goes. It's what led me to the question.

it seems kids 18 and below take pride on being stupid and not knowing anything older than 5 years.

im in my 20s and I know (and like) Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc.

are they my go-to? Nope. Will you find me rocking to them while driving my car? Hell no. But I can appreciate them and know about them.

these younger dumbasses act as if stuff like Avril Lavigne or Justin Timberlake were prehistoric and something their grandparents heard while farming dinosaur food with their stone instruments. Imagine telling them about The Rolling Stones.... but korok! The stones were a band before they were even alive!. I know, the stones were a band before I was even alive too.

It's not pejorative if dads own the label.

That and a lot of people who use it are the same ones who complain about people not liking new music.

To me dad rock isn't so much about the era, though it is, but also the quality of the music.
Think Dad Sneakers.

So, in that sense, I would say Chicago is the epitome of Dad Rock.
I could name a few others. But it's mostly music I can't stand at this point.

Exactly. I think "dad rock" is any music the dad listened to when he was younger/growing up. And I think that's how people use the term.

i guess it usually refers to classic rock that your dad listens to.

dont understand whats wrong with that. heck some of the bands that fall in this category are actually cool. as if there's anything wrong with listening to older bands... lol

That's the simplified answer. Like considering generations as 20 year periods rather than the circumstances of the time.

Dad Rock to me is tepid 'Rock and Roll' that doesn't say anything but pretend to be somehow hard.
For instance...

Bad Company, is Dad rock.
Aerosmith, only sometimes. ((Aerosmith is there own little thing))

The Rolling Stones, No.

Chicago, 100%.

Also, the cousin of Dad Rock and this is something I came up with is, Cubical Rock.
~Oh which, Phil Collins is the King.
