It used to be Big Bird but Elmo got so popular in the 90s he took over I think? Good on ya Elmo. Abby seems to have worked her way up to being the co-lead. Then the Cookie Monster, Grover and maybe Rudy. Then the rest. Bert and Ernie seem to be in the show way less than they used to be compared to when I was growing up.

This is the Sesame Street update for CE. It's still a pretty good show for kids tbh. I have a daughter who is a toddler just to be clear lol.

My theory based on my limited amount of viewing this show is that the Muppets in the show used to be adult characters (Big Bird, The Count, Oscar, Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie etc.) teaching kids and Elmo's popularity reversed this trend and now the focus is primarily on the kid Muppets (Elmo, Abby, Rudy, Zoe etc.) because overall the kids find these characters more relatable. Cookie and Grover are still around more because their characters are overall naive and easier to make segments around them because the shows format seems to work more when the kids learn with the characters.

Yeah my daughter has been saying "Mo! Mo?" lately when the show transitions to those segments with kids insted of the muppets lol

Actually yeah I'd bump up Cookie to top three with Elmo and Abby. They all have their own dedicated segments and plots in the actual episodes. Most other characters only have one of those.

i never liked big bird. always found him annoying. somehow, Elmo is far less annoying than Big Bird was. Elmo is just an energetic kid, basically...Big Bird always whined about everything.

I read the target age sort of changed.

BB is more like 5-7 year old. So, stories focused more on things a kid that age might be dealing with.

Elmo is like 3-4 year old. So now the stories now focus more at kids that age l.

Yeah Big Bird is a bit dull compared to the most of the cast tbh.
Elmo is energetic and exciting
Oscar is grumpy
Cookie Monster is silly and wants to eat cookies
The Count is a vampire
Abby has magic
Grover is dopey
Big Bird is big and has a nest

Cookie monster is the obvious best character on that show, but I guess he wouldn't work as the main host of the show.
