this took me a long time to understand but from what i do....a producer just owns the equipment and resources needed to fullfill any given project....like a film producer owns a studio space and rents it out with their name on it

Depends on the level.

My step sister is a producer for shows on tlc and discovery channel. She goes around with the film crew, helps set up shots and filming. Decides which bits get put on tv and which footage to use.

For these reality shows they end up with literal days of footage for an episode that they have to cut up and make into a coherent storyline for an episode that is hopefully entertaining.

Publishers and producers typically front the costs of making a game or movie, paying salaries and buying necessary equipment because the money won't start coming in until after the project is completed. In return, they receive a cut of the sales, and will have some creative input over the project in order to ensure it will sell.

They can own their own studio but film producers are overseers of the film project. Basically s/he is the person who has the final say in stuff like what studio to rent or what special effects team to hire or just about everything.
