Although it could be perfectly possible and plausible for an Asian character to have an American accent, there actually are plenty of Asians who were born and raised in a non-Asian country, yet have an Asian accent. Usually this is due to them speaking their parents' language at home and/or in their local community.

Whether this is the case for Mei Ling is speculative, but I hope that this kind of stuff is not necessarily racist by default.
Honestly, I think for most characters who have an accent in MGS it adds flavour and character. One of the reasons I dislike the storytelling MGS4 and TTS is because everyone having a 'neutral' accent just makes it feel bland and not very plausible.

This sounds like someone outside looking in. I've grew up with second generation immigrants. When we were in elementary school, yeah some had real thick accents, but by middle school and high school you couldn't even tell.

That is possible. Whether accents were/are fluent or sound foreign with Asians I've met so far tends to vary. Personally I'm half-Indonesian, born and raised in the Netherlands, and I've always had a fluent Dutch accent, though this is not the case for all Indonesian people I've met, some of which I know were born in the Netherlands.

They did it that way in MGS1 because at the time it was interpreted by the voice director that she picked up some form of accent from her parents, which isn't implausible.

It was retconned later on since the west received better direction from Kojima going forward, so yeah, a nothing burger.

but it is implausible. she was american born. there is nothing in the story to suggest she had a special childhood where she was homeschooled or something out of the ordinary. there is no way for her to have a stereotypical asian accent being exposed to the language since kindergarten. mgs1 remains a racist game, but hey if you want to hand wave it and defend it, feel free to continue.
