I know you want them in pairs, generally speaking. The two I have in slots 2 and 4 are the same currently.

When I upgrade, and put two more in slots one and three, do they also need to be the same as two and four?

Ideally you would get a matched 32 gig kit, but 2 kits of the same make/model are ok as well if you want to go 16 and 16.

you can mix and it will work but its always best if they match
you dont even need to match the pairs. i think the pc will try its best to dual channel with what it can and it will be bottlenecked by the slowest speed, and if they are different sizes they will only dual channel up to the capacity of the smallest stick.
i may be wrong

the important factors are ram speed and ram timing. you want to match those. brand and size differences shouldn't matter.

Thats what I plan to do, shoot for 32 gigs. Right now Im sitting at 16, and its fine, but a bit more wouldnt hurt.

Def gonna go for the same model then.

Is it even worth shooting for more than 32 gigs? Seems like it would be overkill.

Sometimes the mainboard may not like having mismatched ram, even if they're the same CL/speed. Sometimes you luck out, hell if my first computer build, i was using 2 sticks of 256mb and a stick of 512mb ram and it worked fine. But as a general rule, you just want to get a matched kit that's on the QVL of the mobo and stick with that.

depends on what you do. imo the days of 8gb are over so id reccomend no less than 16gb. if all you do is game, web browse etc then 16gb is plenty
