This is the most I've ever played the game. I looked up a few videos on beginner tips. Apparently, I should make a grappling hook? I got the hook to drop off some piranha. I just reached the lava place and that weird blue area to the left of it. Should I keep exploring underground, or should I explore more along the surface?

You generally want to start with a home base. Preferably a distance off the ground. Set up a room for crafting stations, another for chests, and then start making rooms for NPCs. 8x6 tends to work. Put in a door, walls, table, chair, and a light source. NPCs will begin to move in and you can buy items from them.

Check both ends of your map. You'll find the Angler floating around near or on the ocean. Once you have some decent basic weapons and a pickaxe make your way underground. Always have torches, rope and/or wooden platforms on you. You'll come across many abandoned bases with stations, furniture and chests full of goodies.

Look out for gripping claws so you can wall jump, and a mirror for teleportation. You'll always teleport to the original spawn point on the surface unless you make a new spawn point and right click a bed in your base.

Cool. Thanks. Im just now checking out videos about building my house better to get people to move in, including vendors. I just built a small fort and started exploring. I think I might start making my house better a bit lol.

There's only really one type of fixed objective in Terraria and a shitload of ways to go about doing it. The goal is to kill the sub-bosses to ultimately kill the "final boss" deep below underground (some call that the beginning of the true game however lol). You don't even have to cater to NPCs if you just like speedrun the shit and find a good ranged weapon and kill all the bosses.

But it's def more fun if you do like everything. Build a ton of houses for the NPCs, visit all the biomes, explore the dungeon, find the stuff in the skies. find all the building tools to make a bunch of cool shit. You can build like farms and fish spot. The later battles get extremely difficult too, and none of them really happen in the same way or have a singular approach you gotta go about them. It's basically a very freeform RPG

But if you also want, you can just spend the entire time building shit lol. But that does require you to explore a bit to find the various pieces

Another tip for a bit later on is start with creating new worlds. Not every world spawns every item and sometimes you stumble upon items like the aforementioned claws far sooner when exploring other worlds.
Also, try to save up 10 gold asap and buy the piggy bank from the merchant (should be your 1st NPC after the guide). You can take it with you while exploring, place it down and you have an extra inventory that allows you to take far more stuff back home. Don't forget to take it with you after though. I've had to spend far too much gold replacing piggy banks that I forgot in the underground

Cool, thanks, guys. Yeah, the videos I'm watching explained the bosses, including the midway boss and the final boss. I feel like if I restart, I'll keep wanting to restart again and again. So I'll keep going with this playthrough and just see how it goes.

btw is your world on Normal or Expert? Expert is recommended as you'll get special drops from the bosses.

This guide is pretty decent. It gives you an over view of the biomes and what can be farmed and what your "goal" is.

There's one for hardmode too.

I use this when i've been away from the game for a while. I have a few hundred hours into Terraria and still to this day don't remember the order of killing bosses v activating hardmode ore.

THIS HAS SPOILERS. DO NOT USE IF YOU DONT WANT TO BE SPOILED.

Thanks, guys. I've already spoiled myself on purpose about the bosses, but I haven't looked too much into them. I know about the wall of flesh or whatever it's called and how that triggers hard mode when you beat it. I've heard there's no real story for the game, so I don't care that much about spoilers lol.

Build up a base with housing so NPCs can start moving in. After that just try and get better and better gear so you can start boss progression.

I'd recommend making an arena at the spawn point (where you go when you magic mirror). It helps a ton for fighting bosses and invasions. Just create a decent sized flat surface, try to fill in the area underneath the ground so enemies are less likely to spawn there, and make multi-level platforms that you can jump up and down to avoid enemies. Space out some campfires and heart lanterns for faster heals.

Avoid crimson/corruption areas until you have a handful of extra hearts and some decent armor. Should also avoid jungle for a while. Explore the surface until these areas gatekeep you out, then start searching underground. You'll want to bring ropes, wood platforms, and (lots of) torches when you go down. Carry some glowsticks too, can save your life if you fall into a dark cave filled with water. You should build your tunnels somewhat nearby your home base so you can haul loot back up easier.

Also be sure to take the chests you loot with you, you'll need somewhere to store items and materials. Its never too early to start organizing, try making a rows of chests for different purposes; one row could be weapons, next could be ammo, items, potions, materials, etc.

You'll probably want to look up bosses and how to summon/encounter them, since it can be pretty obscure sometimes.

Creating a new world isn't a full restart. You'll be able to hop between your new and old worlds using the same character with the same inventory and piggy bank inventory. Say you need a Balloon (slows fall) which spawns in chests on the sky islands. But your world doesn't spawn that particular item. You just create a new world, spend 10-15 exploring the sky islands of that world. After finding it you can delete that world or keep it to gather large quantities of ore or certain blocks when you get a drill.
