I think some if it was, but I also think some if it was just because her scenes weren't action-heavy or "badass" like a lot of Walt's were.

I think the bigger reason is that she is genuinely an abrasive character and she gets in the way of the protagonist.

There's definitely some misogyny mixed in there though.

The difference is that Hank is part of the main storyline of the show with the drugs and whatnot, It still progresses the plot forward when he gets in the way. Skylar getting in the way often impedes it.

Lol her reaction for the most part were realistic. Walt is a villian in the series and her character being abrasive and such to a drug dealing husband, who would put everything they own and done at risk for drugs. Yeah I'd react the same way

It's funny when I watched the show, it was about a year after it ended and I kept seeing shit about how she was the worse character...and then I watched it, she seemed fairly reasonable outside of the Ted shit as a way to get back at Walt.

But holy fuck, the second time watching the show, all of the characters were fucking awful outside of Jesse, until he got to his depressed phase in Season 5.

Being honest, I think it's incredible writing though that people actually saw Skyler as a shitty person opposed to the psychopathic drug lord Walt came to be. It really says something about Gilligan that he wrote such an amazing character that people actually sympathized with him.

That makes no sense. In KoTH, the plot doesn't really matter that much as long as the jokes are good, so who cares. And Skylar's character is part of the story, a huge part. Is anyone who doesn't let Walt freely sell meth with no push back impede the plot? Or is it coincidentally just his wife that it works that way for?

Well, even if that's so, that's just subjective. It doesn't speak anything about her character. I feel like the family stuff is very necessary and a huge part of the show. If it was all just drug deals and bang bang, then it might as well just be a Quentin Tarantino movie instead. You can't showcase an average family man turning into a kingpin without the family.

I actually have the opposite complaint with The Sopranos. It was hard to watch Tony's wife just take everything and be in denial all the time with next to no input. To me, Skylar is just a way better written character and contribution to the story. Maybe it helps that I watched them in the opposite order of what most people did.

It was literally the only way she felt she could make him feel as betrayed as she felt by him. And it was also necessary to show that he wasn't holding all the power in their relationship. The dynamic was completely lopsided before she did that.

In regards to Skylar specifically, for some people it was probably based on misogyny because I'm sure misogynistic people watched the show, for others it was probably due to her being specifically setup as a barrier to Walt's success as a drug dealer for the most part. My reasons for disliking Skylar weren't based on her being a woman it was based on her not letting Walt do whatever he wanted. The fun in the show, for me and my wife when we watched it, was watching Walt become a king pin. This doesn't mean we would have rooted for Walt in a real life scenario, nor did we think Skylar acted unreasonably. It's a work of fiction and and we cheered for the protagonists. Walt was absolutely a terrible human being but it was much more interesting than if he had just stayed a teacher and let himself die of cancer because he gave up.

I believe the creator, (a feminist btw), has said she made it so that adults and a general audience can enjoy it ala Spongebob and those shows you mentioned.

If spongebob was called spongekid and was a remake of an earlier show targeted at 3 year olds, it wouldnt be as iconic and popular as it is today

I actually hated Hank more than Skylar. I always felt he was really condescending towards Walt and acted like an asshole towards him. Hank actually felt like he was trying to emasculate Walt constantly.
