Shouldn't need to warn for spoilers but did it anyway.

Love Fist is referenced in the story mode as a side mission and there's a poster of Love Fist in at least one spot of the map.

Then Madd Dogg and OG Loc posters are seen in Franklin's house along with CD's too. Along with a book published by CJ in Lester's house.

Then there's Lazlow , i don't think he references his days in Vice City though.

Rockstar themselves have said the games take place in different universes but brands and such do cross over. And of course Easter eggs. Tommy Vercetti and Michael De Santa do not exist in the same universe. But Cluckn Bell and Mybatsu(spelling?) do.

Because they're Easter eggs and references. That's why it's generally limited to locations, vehicles, radio stuff and cute little callbacks.

But plot/lore wise nothing in the PS2 era happened in the HD games.

There are many references to GTAIII characters and brands (El Burro graffiti in LC for example) in GTAIV, but do any characters (other than Lazlow) actually exist within both 'universes'? Is that where Donald Love went? Did he hop dimensions into the GTAIV universe?! Plot twist!! Are the two universes completely separate? I understand it'd make almost no sense having two Liberty City's but is there any way we'll see characters from GTAIII return? GTAIV has some amazing characters, but some of the characters in the III era are just unforgettable.

Theres 3 universes:

GTA 1, 2, & London;

GTA 3, Vice City, & San Andreas;

GTA 4 & 5.

Of course it goes without saying that the associated spin offs are also in the same canon.

What happens and exists in one universe doesnt necessarily have to have happened or exist in another, but its not too far a shot to say it did. So while its possible for the events of GTA:SA to have taken place in the GTA5 universe, you can also assume it didnt. But at the same time, the events of GTA4 100% did take place before GTA5. Its how Lamar can reference the Grove Street Families in 5, and he may or may not be talking about CJ and crew.
