They're threatening but very easily killed, letting the game use them to chip you down without feeling cheap. Hard balance to get, and I dont include the expansions here(fuck plutonia)

Its clever encounter design, kill the hotscanners while dodging the projectiles and running and killing off the melee.

The chaingun guys are cheap as hell, any machine gun hitscan enemy in retro fps games are really hard to get by without taking a little damage

if were talking all fps games theres plenty that do it better, halo 2 for example

The chaingun guys are fine unless the map is poorly made or cruel, which isn't the case in any of the originals. They don't generally fire right away, and they can be killed in a single shotgun shot.

Halo 2 forces a specific kind of gameplay where you have to hide behind cover and wait for shields. It's not awful, but it's definitely not better gameplay than Doom.

Also, funny that partial invisibility makes you safer against hitscanners but way more vulnerable to projectiles

Blood isnt bad. But the rng can be painful sometimes.

I mean, the first couple levels of Blood are harder than the vast majority of the rest of the vanilla game and Cryptic Passage. If RNG isn't with you in an early shotgun and accompanying ammo drops, it can be a slog.

Not as bad as some of the parts of Post Mortem and Death Wish, though.
