You're probably right, but the nostalgia for that game is strong.

Etched in my memory is that one moment in the game after becoming the champion where you're introduced to Kanto. Back before the internet was around to spoil everything about a game, that was the most wtf awesome moment of my childhood. That little trek through Route 27 not knowing where it would lead is a core memory for me.

I wanted FireRed/LeafGreen to be a sequel to RBY, but nah just a remake.

Gens 2 and 5 are easily the best ones. The real overrated crap gens are 3 and 4, moreso 4 because there's a huge disconnect between its quality and the love it gets due to nostalgia from the people who played it as their first one.

I thought X&Y had some potential but just felt unfinished and upolished, kind of how Diamond & Pearl felt in comparison to Platinum. For some reason Kalos ended up being the only region not to be revisited

Nope. It literally did everything its predecessor did but better. Going to Kanto was mind blowing at the time, if a bit shallow. Unlike RS that made every single Pokemon you caught before irrelevant and removed the day/night cycle, GS set the standard of what Pokemon games should achieve at the very minimum.

Very strange take because I would think someone who replays Pokemon so much would get more value out of X/Y, the games in the series with the most variety. The early games mostly have atrocious variety, so chances are you're going to use a good deal of the same Pokemon in subsequent playthroughs. With Gen 6, you can do multiple playthroughs and still have access to Pokemon you may not have used before.

Yeah whenever I reflect on gen 2 it just seems to be half baked. Little obnoxious things like making you wait until Kanto for Houndour, or how you're bumping into Pidgeys and Rattatas more often than new gen 2 Pokemon. I specifically remember being so excited to walk into the tall grass on that first route only to bump into a Pidgey and being like... "Really, that's it?"

Sun/Moon took everything bad about Pokemon and amped it up to 11 while fixing just one thing (removing HMs). It's insultingly linear and there's so much shallow unskippable dialogue it is pretty much impossible for me to go back to.

Gen 1 just had great pacing that I don't think was matched by Gen II or any other Pokemon game to date. Started out linear, but once you got a few badges the map opened up in a way that you could explore, catch pokemon, win badges, and fight Team Rocket in almost any order you wanted. The game didn't bog you down with tutorials and handholding but was simple enough you could pick up and learn on your own or talk to NPCs early game and learn tricks

The new Pokemon were virtually all awful and for some reason way harder to obtain than the original 151. The level curve was ATROCIOUS. Kanto was a hollow shell of its former self. Half of the new gym leaders didn't even use any new Pokemon. Chikorita is the worst starter in the history of the Pokemon franchise.

That's the problem though. Imo there are so many Pokemon it makes it unbearably hard to come up with a solid team. You look at a game like Platinum, or hell even Diamond and Pearl, you have a set list of what is where and how you find something (Spiritomb excluded since get it is borderline impossible now.) But in Kalos you have areas that can have over 10 possible encounters and you can get a full team of 6 Pokemon before the first gym. Its super bloated and usually I fall off the excitement train by the Furfrou maze puzzle.

That's not even the only mind-blowing part of that game. As cool as it was to realize you could revisit the place from the first Pokemon game, it was just as hype to realize what's waiting at the end of Mount Silver after you beat Kanto.

OK I love gen 4 almost as much as I like gen 2, but I have to say

Despite being very important and drastically changing the viability of many Pokemon, splitting the physical and special moveset on a move-by-move basis didn't actually add any new content. It just fixed one component of an existing mechanic. So comparing it with the introductions of mechanics like breeding, abilities, or held items isn't so valid. Those mechanics actually brought novel content to the game for people to experience, whereas the split was just fixing a mechanic that had been left broken for too long.

I do think it was important to do but I don't think fixing what was clearly a broken mechanic is as impressive as people make it sound.

On the other it introduced stealth rock so it can go fuck itself.
