Im okay with reds.

Not huge fan of whites, aside from Chardonnays, so just don't have as much experience to know them.

Though a lot of it comes down to preference.

But yes, some wine just tastes like wine.
There's do something and have something to say.

Also, price does not always dictate how good a bottle is.
There are plenty of fine wines in the $10-15 price range.

As an open bottle of wine has a very short shelf life.

i've made bulk wine that sells for $7 with low quality grapes, you really have to play god with bagged sugar, copper, and sulfur dioxide to make the wine palatable.

then the other end of the spectrum there's lovely handpicked grapes in a bumper year that basically makes itself into a world class drop with minimal intervention/additives.

there's a big difference between a $7 bottle and a $30 bottle. from many years experience, anything north of $80 for the sake of buying an expensive bottle isn't worth it.

The closest one to me isn't that close.
But I have a friend that works down there.
I should ask him if he happens to be in there to pick one up.

You can definitely tell between bottom of the barrel wine and cheapish wine.

I can taste the difference between good wine and bad wine. I can't taste the difference between a really good wine that's maybe just beyond my general paygrade and wine so excellent that I simply can't afford it.

So in real terms, wine that is 3 will be unilaterally terrible and taste like off colour vinegar piss. Wine that is 5 is hit or miss. Wine that is 8-20 better be good.

But jesus I can't really tell you if a wine bought at retail value for 80 from that 20 wine.

I think it's because in the medium range there are so many hidden gems and micro-vinyards that the quality sways drastically in method and consistency.

I noticed an interesting paradigm shift when I moved from Australia to the UK where due to import taxes and shipping costs you'd pay top dollar for the status of a very mediocre French wine over in Australia. Way more mediocre than many great Australian wines at cheaper prices.

Now that I'm here, I can get really good French wines for not very much. Well, this is a pre-Brexit argument at least.

The less the bottle tells you the better.
You are supposed to know.

You should get the company.
The location, and the vintner.

And that's about it.

After it's turned out that most sommeliers can't accurately taste test, the conversation shifted to "well they enhance the experience", so at this point I consider them to basically be just glorified entertainers that ego boost the customer and help justify the high prices of the wine the person won't actually appreciate.

This is going to really fuck with you and I apologise in advance but I tend to not go for the peaty speysides in favour of the sweeter honey ones, and sometimes even just enjoy a shitty blend. On that same theme I really like bourbon but it gives me a ripping hangover.

Favourites of the single malt whisky kind would be glenkinchie and glenfarclas.

Limeburners is an exellent Australian whisky and I am a big fan of Japanese whisky too.

Tbh i took a certain joy in a few videos i saw of self proclaimed wine experts and sommeliers proving they have no idea what they're talking about or even what they personally like most.

Nothing wrong with enjoying wine but wine snobs are irritating. Can't avoid them around here either. I swear we have more wineries than any other single business.

I do like the smoke Islay stuff. But I do also want to tap into some of the Highland stuff.

I am really interested in some of the Honey notes of the Highland Scotch.
