Not necessarily predicated upon the payoff being worth it, just the hype leading up to it!

Well I'm not old enough to comment on the hype surrounding the OT but the lead-up to the Phantom Menace was nuts and nothing since then has matched it.

They used to show the PM trailer on MTV's TRL, there was so much hype. And Weird Al wrote a song about it before seeing the movie, by figuring out the plot from trailers and leaks.

Phantom Menace, easily. A new star wars flicks after ~15 years of slumber? Trailers with Duel of the Fates left and right? People camping out for weeks+? check check check

And it was such a disappointment.

The backlash came way later when more peeps started gaining access to the Internet. TPM actually got good reviews when it came out. Roger Ebert gave it 3 1/2 stars.

Phantom Menace. Then Attack of the Clones. Then Revenge of the Sith

The entire prequel era was incredibly hyped up. Too bad about the delivery. And even worse the sequels.

Barely anyone I know had a computer in 99 never mind internet. My only computer access at the time was an old Apple 2 for word processing at school.

Regardless though, the point stands. Well respected critics initially loved the film.

And? My mom was 39. We still didnt have a computer. Nor did family who lived down the street or any of my friends at the time. Shit was expensive back then. Again my only computer access was an Apple II and moms only experience was an accounting program at work that ran through DOS.

Not sure where you lived where everyone was rocking a 2k computer in 99, but lucky them, I wish.

George Lucas went to Hawaii because he expected it to flop.

The fact that literally overnight it became a pop culture hit is insane, considering that was long before the advent of the internet.

Even people who wouldn't be into that stuff, like my mom, wound up going to see it in theaters.

TPM hype birthed a feature-length comedy where the central plot revolved around that very hype (Fanboys). I don't think any other non-OT SW release is on that level yet.

And there you go.

I grew up on Vancouver Island. Nobody had a computer unless they were extremely rich, and this was long before the island became a playground for rich doucher's from the mainland.

I remember going to a friend's house in probably around 2000 and her family had just gotten a computer and we were playing some TLC game on it. Not counting home consoles and game boys, the only PC game I had ever seen was The Oregon Trail in black and white, so Treasure Mathstorm or whatever the fuck it was just blew me away.

As for the internet, yeah, no one had that. The first time I saw internet was when the Spirit Rover was being launched in late 2003, and again that was at school, not anyone's house.

Perhaps Vancouver Island specifically didn't have many computers in 1999. I recall visiting out of state and still seeing PCs in homes. I got my Ski Free, Space Cadet Pinball, minesweeper, video solitaire, Microsoft paint, etc memories from somewhere and it wasn't the 2000s.

I think it must depend where you grew up and your income.

I watch a guy on YT named MetalJesus who actually worked for Sierra in the late 80's/early 90's, and he had an expensive PC back then that he bought through his work on a payment plan, and the AVGN had a Commodore in the 80's through his parents, yet my mom said she didn't even see a home computer in person till the 90's, and again that was a crummy DOS computer at her work.

For me it was definitely the lead-up and aftermath of Revenge of the Sith. Star Wars just hit such a great stride during those times. You had the original Clone Wars cartoon going on around then. Star Wars Battlefront released in Fall 2004 and then Battlefront 2 came out the following year. Empire at War came out in early 2006.

I remember reading a lot of Wookieepedia around this time. And of course 2005 is when I joined gamefaqs. Mostly to post on the Battlefront 2 board.

And as far as the movie itself, everyone thought this was going to be the last Star Wars film ever. All we really had left was the Expanded Universe.

Until Disney inexplicitly canned the entirety of the EU to try out their focus-group approved storyline...

The Sequel Trilogy should have been a hard sequel to the Original Trilogy/Prequel Trilogy and a soft sequel to the EU. That is, the main plot would focus on unanswered questions from the past film while utilizing characters such as Jaina Fel, Ben Skywalker, and Allanna Solo from the EU.

The EU could have been saved for when Disney wants to adapt the best stories from that era. Just like what they do with the Marvel. Shit, Disney will probably do that anyway despite their renouncement of the EU.

Honestly as a Star Wars mega fan (I actually *gasp* enjoyed the ST) most of the EU is horrible.

A lot of Disney's decisions are questionable, but getting rid of a large majority of the EU and taking only the good stuff (Thrawn), is somewhat of a godsend. NJO was so god damn bad.

I liked the sequels on first watch except for TFA. But not liking TFA is what led me to enjoy TLJ and TRoS. After TFA stomped out my anticipation for Luke's new Jedi Order, Leia's new Galactic Republic, and Vader/Padme's known descendants then it was easier for me to consider the ST as non-canon from my POV. This allowed me to enjoy episodes 8 and 9 for what they were and not be disappointed how they were disconnected from the previous six films.

Have you actually read NJO? I know a lot of people think of Luke's jedi order as the Outcast/Academy games, but the novels were absolutely horrendous. Glorified fan fiction at it's worst.

The Vong are the worst Star Wars villains I've ever seen. They basically felt like OP anime antagonists.

People talk about how the new movies shit on the lore, but then we had an entire novel series where the force didn't work on the bad guys. That's not creative, it's just fan fiction tripe.

I doubt many people would care as much about the EU being rendered non-canon if the ST wasn't such a mixed bag for a lot of Star Wars fans. There are a few things I really liked about the EU, but ultimately I think the current, more rigid Star Wars canon is much better. It's just unfortunate that it was headlined by a trilogy of movies that turned out to be so awful.
