Do you mean like an index fund? Yeah. Way better than regular mutual funds that charge you out the ass in fees.

it seems like an index fund would not be any better than mutual funds in the long run.

yes, you do get charged, but you're paying people to make trades FOR you , so...

if you're worried about being overcharged you can look for "no load" funds like what Vanguard or Charles Scwhab offers.

No, my US index funds are total market and two small cap funds. Total market is basically the same as S&P though.

Index funds make trades for you as well, but instead of paying someone who rarely ever beats the market anyway you are paying an algorithm to do it.
