I feel like it's not rooted in any sort of reality and no one is actually so hopped up that they would fly off the handle because you used "he" casually without knowing any better. Anyone using it does so because they THINK it's what SJWs would say in an attempt to mock them. I could imagine someone saying "I don't go by that," and being polite about it but just flatly accusing someone of violating etiquette that they weren't even aware was in play is just making presumptions. --- "It feels like I'm always wrong."
