Does this count as a TAS run?

Speedruns usually allow some bugs that the game causes, regardless of outside factors.

Sometimes.

But i dont think this would be allowed. Just like cartridge tilting and modifying your controller.

Huh. Level cap is 99 and HP/MP maximums are 999?

That seems ... odd.

EDIT: Looks like the Hero is Level 99 and the others are... uh... huh.

But this is more like there could be a real life non-intentional situation where a console is hot enough to cause this bug. Cartridge tilting absolutely requires some physical mishap, and controller mod has been approved before, sometimes to avoid physical damage to players lol. Would be up to the judges but usually such interesting methods don't get banned

If it's allowed, it would probably be in its own category.

TAS: Cartridge melting versus no melting, for example.

Think about all those Famicom DQ3 cartridges in the background that might end up melting because of this!

It pretty much was already. This was done for RTA in Japan. Can't believe I missed that. ;_;

So is there a speedrun category for skipping straight to the last level in Sonic 3D Blast?

Maybe. There are some speedrun categories for games where you can do that. Ocarina of Time is one that comes to mind.

Ocarina of Time uses a sequence breaking glitch to jump to the final battle. Sonic 3D relies on a mechanical failure to access a level select menu where you can go to any level. It's not quite the same thing.

I suppose a similar thing is if the cartridge-wiggling glitch for N64 games like GoldenEye somehow allowed you to skip to the end, would that be allowed as its own category? I'm not sure. But what I've noticed from the Japanese speedrunning community is that they don't really have what I'd call consistency. For start times, it can usually be the same, but sometimes there's discrepancies.

Like this year when RiJ showed off Dark Souls Remastered, they started the timer the moment they entered character creation. Astral Chain has a character creator, but they didn't start the timer until they actually started the game after character creation.

And end times vary wildly. Sometimes the end time is at the last input at the game, like what's sort of become standard here in the west. But they have a lot of arbitrary, random end times for different games. Like Kirby's Dream Course's timer keeps counting through the credits, and only stops when Kirby's done spelling out "End" with stars.

So whether the hot plate trick is a legit category for Japan's speedrunning community, or more of a "TAS bot" kind of demonstration like you'd get from GDQ, I'm not sure. Most likely a legit category.
