Like its baffling that nowadays it's just expected games by big AAA companies are just expected to be buggy and unpolished upon release, and you have to wait for them to be patched up over a few years to be finally decent.

Also seems like each year had more truly great releases. Like going back to the late 80s to early 2000s I could name a ton of great games from each year while recently it feels like you get two or three truly great games a year. Maybe that's just due to my taste though.

You know there are other types of games released besides AAA, right?

A little of column A, a little of column B.

Everyone I know who's played Cyberpunk loves it, but I can see how someone would let rose-colored glasses make common flaws and practices seem recent.

Yes I do. I prefer Indie to AAA games these days. I will say a lot of Indie games I think try too hard to emulate their influences and can sometimes feel like watered down versions of older games. Like playing the Messenger just made me wanna go back to NES Ninja Gaiden 2.

Personally I think there are more good games than ever to play. There was a time when I felt like I could play all of the great ones I wanted to play. Now I'm just constantly bombarded with games for cheap prices.

Yeah, I fell out of games several years ago, and I thought it was due to modern games, but that turned out to be depression, and I just wasn't enjoying anything.

Now I've got a slew of games on the backburner, play all day, and I'm very rarely dissatisfied with new games I play.

I've had moments like that yeah. I usually try to balance playing older and newer games. The newer games just disapoint me a lot more :p

All kinds I mean i dont really have specific genres I stick to, I'll play anything if i find it engaging. I do tend to prefer games that prioritize gameplay and not a big fan of too many open world or survival horror games admittively. With the last couple of years I really liked Sekiro, Doom Eternal, and Dos 2.

I try all sorts of stuff as well and I thi K the variety of games I choose keeps me pretty happy. I played Desperados 3 not long ago which wasn't really like anything else I've played recently and now I'm playing CrossCode which is like an indie game that's a big combination of retro and modern RPG action-adventure gameplay design.

There are so many games out there that sound interesting that I don't even know I'll have time to play. Like Raji is a Prince of Persia style game and the demo was great.

It's easy to think this, but then you go back and play some of those old games and realize how far they've come. That's not to say old games aren't good, because a lot of them are, but even the good ones are frustrating for bad reasons and so few of them have any real depth to the gameplay. They have fewer bugs because there was a lot less programming, and the bugs that were there are still there and always will be.

Hows Desperatos 3 compare to Shadow tactics? Shadow Tactics I really liked.

Never played Shadow Tactics (another example of a game I want to play but might never get around to) but I'm sure if you liked that you'd like Desperados 3.

I mean I go back and play a lot of older games constantly and I gotta say I cant agree at all. I dont know what you mean by frustrating for lack of depth when it comes to gameplay but I guess it depends on what games you mean. Like how are the Thief games lacking in depth compared to more recent stealth games?

Also would you say stuff like Nethack, Xcom UFO Defense, and Jagged Alliance 2 are lacking in gameplay depth?

Most likely though I might check out the old Commandos games they were inspired by first.

Don't know.

But back in the early 2000s people wondered that if games become too realistic looking they'll lose their fantasy feel.

It's very similar mechanically; most characters' abilities have direct comparisons between the two games. But being able to pause for showdown/shadow mode really allows things to shine, imo.
