When I was visiting the Philippines over easter in 2003, I saw plenty of faux crucifixions on the street. Children and adults limping along the sidewalk carrying a cross that seemed so heavy it looked like it was breaking their backs. A few of them even wore crowns with actual thorns that cut them and made their faces all bloody. At 13 I remember being absolutely horrified.
