Hell no I never hit them, that's fucked.

I raised a puppy this year and he learned bite inhibition training very easily.

At least for dogs you basically just shout as if you're in pain and pull your hand away every time they bite on your hand, even if their teeth aren't hurting you. Teaches them that they need to be careful with humans, basically makes them think you're a complete wuss. That way even if they are agitated by something they'll be careful with their bite because they don't want to actually hurt you.

I do this multiple times per day even now to reinforce the training, seemed to work perfectly on my pup.

You do positive and negative reinforcement. If your pet does something you don't want them to do, do negative reinforcement by ignoring the pet, very lightly tapping, water bottle, etc. If your pet does something you like, reward with a treat, pets, etc.

You should never hit your pet to the point where it would actually hurt them.
