There are 2 kinds of asmr, sexual and non sexual. Most people not into asmr seem for some reason to think its all sexual. None of the ones I subscribe to on YouTube are sexual really. I have seen ones like that but I don't usually click on them. You can usually tell just by looking at the thumbnail.

One of the biggest ASMR artists out there isn't even intentional. It's Bob Ross. Calm quiet voice, soft swiping of the brushes, tapping of the paint knife.

I used to fall asleep to his show every night. There was nothing sexual about it.

Its kind of odd that people cant fathom this being a non sexual thing... I cant say Ive experienced the tingly sensation people bring up but its not outside the realm of possibility that other people have.

I don't think it did come to light decades later! It just isn't something that people were talking about as much before the internet. Probably because it's such a basic thing that most of the population takes it for granted. There are probably tons of other subtle sensations that people experience all the time, which just don't have names yet.

Bob Ross is the perfect example to show that it has nothing to do with sexy women whispering.

Its happened to me since I was a kid. I had never heard anyone else talk about it so I thought I was just weird. Then I saw this ASMR label pop up and was relieved to know I wasn't insane.

As for the name ASMR, oh yeah that is definitely fake sciencey-sounding. Like, it was intentionally coined with that purpose, under the belief that a physiological sensation needed a fake sciencey name. Which is a dubious reason to give something a name. But that's what stuck, so oh well.

I mean that's fine. But this almost sounds like doubting sleep paralysis because you haven't experienced it and thinking I got it confused with a regular nightmare. But Wikipedia says only 5% have recurring episodes, which I'm a part of.

In the end I would say it's like a type of skin chill in the same way you get a skin chill from running your hand through your hair or the feeling of bugs crawling under your skin or even pee shivers. But I wouldn't call any of those the same sensation. ASMR is just part of that library that people try to stimulate on purpose.

I'm affected by them and I like it, but for some reason I never listen to them. I just remember years ago I saw a video of this one chick who did it with various gimmicks like being a nun in like 1200 or something or someone from the 40's and that's not even the weirdest ones. I couldn't tell if she was for real or taking the piss out of the whole thing.

It honestly feels like the people making these "sexy" ASMR videos don't even know what ASMR is, and are just trying to cash in on the phenomenon by adding sex to it because they figure sex sells. And it does sell. And I also assume lots of people watching these "sexy" ASMR videos aren't even getting a legit ASMR response out of it.

Yes, this. The sexualized videos make me uncomfortable and dont give me an ASMR response at all.

Y'all really never heard the sound of waves lap against the shore (or a similarly pleasant noise) and felt pleasant tingles down the back of your head/neck from it? That's it. It ain't that complicated. If it wasn't for CE I would have assumed everybody knew that sensation well.

Those are effectively synonymous for many people. "Chills down your spine" can refer to fear, excitement, happiness, whatever. But you'd probably agree that the chills with different emotions feel different.

Because the chills was imprecise to say when you mean "relaxing light tingles in the head and neck associated specifically with relaxation" people came up with the memey name of ASMR. That's it. Trying to trigger than sensation on a regular basis.

But there probably is a a good portion of fans that are really more into the faux intimacy due to loneliness even if they also happen to get the tingles. It is what it is.

Chills does not have a definition everybody agrees on. ASMR does. This is quite literally why a separate term spawned to try to clear up the language. I'm not sure why ASMR as a term bothers you where chills doesn't if they're synonymous to you.

Edit: At the very least people can agree that ASMR is relaxing or pleasant, i should say.
