Amanda Seyfried could have played the role of Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy but turned down the part in the James Gunn-directed Marvelfilm.

Now, shes explaining why she decided to pass on the smash-hit film.

I didnt want to be part of the first Marvel movie that bombed, Amanda said on THRs Awards Chatter podcast. I said, Who wants to see a movie about a talking tree and a raccoon? Which is clearly I was very wrong. Worldwide, Guardians made exactly $772,776,600 at the box office, which is considered a massive success!

The script was great, it was all based in not wanting to be that guy, Amanda continued. Because if you are the star of a giant movie like that, and it bombs, Hollywood does not forgive you. Ive seen that happen to people and it was a giant, giant fear and I thought, is it worth it?

The role eventually went to Zoe Saldana, who has portrayed Gamora in several movies now.

I really don't blame her. From her perspective, at the time she could not have known that the general public was.... is... At a point where they trust Marvel to put out quality films. As such, they will go to see the film regardless of the actual content so long as Marvel is making it.

The trust is there.

Also, even though I didn't like it, I saw GotG being a huge success from a mile away. I never got why people thought that movie was going to bomb.

It was an even bigger gamble than the Avengers were, by a long shot. GotG was a very niche property. It couldve easily ended up like that TV show they did about some guys I cant even remember anymore.

It was Inhumans. The mostly unlikeable characters of that property are a very hard sell even without the show being the crapfest it was.

While true, it was only a TV show. Literally like six people watched Agents of Shield. Nobody else cared. Inhumans was doomed as a TV show.

As a film, I strongly feel that it could have done better.

Guardians Of The Galaxy had oscar winners glenn close and benecio del toro, I'm pretty sure they know better than amanda seyfried.

I'm surprised disney even considered her for that particular role. I think she could still be in marvel playing some other character though, there's so many options now, like maybe an old rogue or something.

to be fair at the time like others mentioned, no one knew what to expect from GotG. it turned out to be different and great, very well done

then Marvel decided every movie needed to be a quip fest after the success of guardians

gotg was part of phase 2 and came after winter soldier... even if it ended up completely sucking there was like no chance it would even come close to bombing.

i feel like it would've been a lateral move given the amount of makeup that goes on gamora

turning down an MCU movie at all is pretty dumb though, especially post avengers 1. although avengers 1 came out may 2012 and GotG1 was august 2014, so maybe avengers 1 hadn't come out by the time her decision had to be made.

Minor supporting roles aren't quite the same thing. When you look at the main cast at the time, the biggest names were Bradley Cooper and Vin Disel, the two CGI characters. If things didn't work out, they could shed the movie pretty easily. Chris Pratt was a TV actor at the time, Dave Bautista was a wrestler, and Zoe's most notable role up to that point was an unrecognizable alien in Avatar. Amanda Seyfried wasn't a particularly notable actress at the time either, but I can understand an actor's hesitation in jumping on the project. Especially when you consider these talks would be happening in 2012/2013. Marvel movies were big, but had not quite hit the reputation as being infallible at that point.

You have to remember that Seyfried only had a script to go on to gauge its potential success, we had some trailers and massive hype built up to go on.

Sure, it was a bigger gamble, but Marvel was literally riding off of the heels of a little more than half a decade's popularity, established that they knew how to establish new franchises in their shared cinematic universe, and got a director on board whose movies garnered a lot of critical acclaim.

I dont disagree with this, but you cant understate the fact that the Marcel franchise was still one bomb away from fucking up the entire works at that point. Theyd already weathered Iron Man 2, after all.

I don't particularly blame her. Marvel was certainly big then, but as she says a talking tree and racoon are a big jump from super heroes for many. And hey, she admits she was wrong.
