I keep getting slapped with waves of grief. ce make it stop. Does anyone have experience with shitty families but still making xmas a fun (or at least neutral) time of year? Or how to cope with not having anyone

I miss my mom. I wish I could give her a hug cause I need one rn. I feel really alone ._.

Take a nap or two during Christmas. Get a break from everything.

my family is an absolute nightmare and ive given up on expecting any holiday cheer from them. i used to go to Dennys with my ex and get trashed in the parking lot and flirt with our waiter....he loved it, probably made his christmas night haha

considering that restaurants are dead now, and no one wants to hang out with me, ive resorted to coming here daily...youve got us, TC!

Plenty of people end up just not celebrating it because they don't have a family to do stuff with. It's hard. It gets easier. But until you can really get used to being alone then, all I can really think of to help is just... Take time for yourself. Be kind and gentle and care about your needs. And cry when you need to and have an appropriate chance to do so. :'( And don't be afraid to reach out to friends.

I remember hearing "If you can't find the good in your family, find your family in the good" - look for those few people around you that are friends. Be honest with them about what you are going through and ask for some company/to keep them company during the upcoming weeks. :)

Well my mom always used to go nuts for Christmas when she was alive, I just kept it with me. I do it the lazy way, but I still hang up lights and a piece of shit 4 ft fake pre lit tree that doesn't fucking light up this year. There's not a lot of family around anymore so I don't go all out. The GF might want to do some extra shit and i'm all for that.

I guess what i'm saying is, Christmas is what you make of it, you could go out there and be bitter and kickin rocks all month, or you can get off your ass and get drunk, smoke, hang some lights, and experience the joy of faulty wiring like the rest of us.

Christmas isn't always about waking up early and finding a bb gun under the tree, sometimes you wake up in your own vomit and half the kitchen burnt down on christmas eve because.... well you won't remember. It's a magical time of year in our lives and you should cherish every bit of it.

Honestly the last part of that sounds really sad even though I know you mean well. The last thing I would want to tell someone in 10 or 20 years is that I spent Christmas waking up in my own vomit. But I get the point you're trying to make that you have to do something that gives you happiness.

It didn't actually happen to me. I mean I have had a fire and woke up throwing up on myself, but never on the same night and never on Christmas Eve. If it DID happen though, i'd think of it as a fond memory because Christmas Eve must have been fun.

I think I'm just too traumatized by alcoholics to find any enjoyment or reason to romanticize that. Like sure it's fun when you are a teenager, but I can't imagine any scenario where that would constitute a happy Christmas

I don't know what happened to you with alcohol, but my most memorable adult Christmases were when I was loaded.

Best memory of that was my friend drunk dancing to Ray Charles - The Mess Around and tripping over a chair backwards and falling into a cabinet. I swear to fuck I haven't laughed that hard in I don't know how long.

I'm talking about waking up in your own vomit on Christmas morning, not a really funny memory of a drunk friend. I have plenty of those myself. It wasn't on Christmas but on a random summer night one of my best friends who is now deceased (ironically because he drank himself to death at the young age of 24) ended up getting a box of chips ahoy cookies on the roof of my house

Well that sucks and that does happen, but just because people get drunk doesn't always mean there's gonna be a fucking tragedy. The occasional trip and fall is great and hilarious, but honestly, it's just a lot of fun and laughter for the majority.

I dunno. It is basically cancelled for my family and I often stress myself out over it and do less than I should and after last year, I told myself I would try harder this year, but my parents were like "no, don't. We aren't doing much. You shouldn't either, seriously" so I guess I have an excuse to slack off again, not that I needed one but at least I don't have to feel like an asshole this time for not doing enough on time...

In any case, the libations advice is good. Just try to enjoy yourself and obviously stay safe. A lot of people will not being staying safe because of a combination of coronavirus, stupid, dumb and idiot.

It does seem a bit surreal that I'm likely not going to be with family this year. I always looked forward to it for a combination of seeing people I don't see more than a few times a year and having a week or two off from work, but thanks to the virus, I haven't worked in months and my family is all pretty vigilant about not doing bullshit that exposes them unnecessarily, hence the cancellation.
