the official definition of cult vs religion is membership numbers. lets say the threshold is 8333333 members.
it's ok to ridicule and hate on the 8333332 members, but once membership gets to 8333333, all of a sudden we must show respect?

Atheism is absence of belief. It's not a belief itself. It should never have had to gain its standing because it's the default state.

Societies without the founding principle of tolerance of beliefs tend to make it illegal to go against the mainstream one.
Gamefaqs can insult you for being atheist but if the government does you can sue.

X can be a religion or it can be that religion is a scam.

But if we do not tolerate beliefs, then whoever is in power historically persecutes anyone who disagrees or deviates. Understand?

I know, but the fact that it wasn't started that long ago means more people ridicule it. it's in a weird place where if it was a few hundred years older it would be treated the same way the rest of christianity is, but old enough to not be some new age cult that everyone makes fun of

christianity was a cult in rome for the first few centuries

edit: like, i'm just saying that numbers are important, but so is age. if information about a religion's founding is more obscure, then it's taken more seriously by society. if jesus or muhammad or whoever was around today, I doubt we would take them seriously, the same way we don't really take hubbard's scientology seriously

And no, atheism isn't an assertion that there is no god @nfearurspecimn . It's a lack of belief in a god.
THERE'S A DIFFERENCE!! Lack of belief is not the same as belief in absence.

Similarly, if we find a jar of marbles, and you just randomly say "This jar has an odd number of marbles, do you believe me?" And I say "no I don't believe you" that doesn't mean I believe the opposite, that there's an EVEN number of marbles. It means I just don't believe your claim.

some people use atheism as if it means the assertion that there is no god, but if you are being precise, that's specifically GNOSTIC atheism. (Gnostic meaning you're claiming knowledge.) If you claim that there is a god then you're a gnostic theist. If you don't believe in a god but you don't assert that one doesn't exist either, then you're agnostic and atheist.
