Jack Daniels is bourbon, they just do that charcoal filtering thing after. So I'd contest how it can really earn its own distinction by that method alone. Which is post distillation.

Although the whiskey world has a lot of bullshit like this so it's not exactly a surprise to anybody in that community. Like how bourbon has stipulations about what types of barrels you use, which can be gotten around by just pouring the whiskey through an open ended bourbon-specific barrel pre-bottling.

Wouldn't call it a dumb marketing ploy though since they (JD) had good reason to differentiate themselves from all the bourbons coming out of Kentucky next door. And since bourbon itself is historically associated with Kentucky.

There's a difference, with the rough edges smoothed off from the charcoal filtering, but...I usually like those rough edges.
