That cop could of passed another test to become a cop for how long he had to think about what he was doing to George Floyd.

Do you think requiring more time learning to be a police officer would make a difference? I really don't know but I'm trending toward probably not :/ but maybe!?

As part of broader reforms yes.

With training as it exists now, probably not. If anything the training is part of the problem.

if you can't make split second decisions well then you probably shouldn't be a cop

I think that's the whole poor schooling thing. They obviously never learn that part. If anything, this is an argument for why they shouldn't all have guns.

Nobody is forcing you to be a cop, if you can't handle the responsibility and repercussions then go find a different similar job. Like being in the mob or maybe just a street gang.

That's my thought as well. I feel that's why defunding the police is the only real option. Fewer cops who only are activated when there is an actual, immediate threat to humans. Use the leftover resources to invest in local communities and hire trained counselors, specializing in the actual needs of the situation, and crisis management professionals.

Yeah. A lot of the "throw more money at the problem" solutions, notably additional training and body cams, are not shown to have a notable affect on police behaviour.

We do the same to doctors in malpractice suits. I don't see why a decision being made in seconds matters if that decision doesn't match up with the (ostensible) standards of your profession.

The people they police also have to make split second decisions, often in disorienting situations and when receiving conflicting or impossible directions. The police don't seem to have much empathy for the public, while they expect infinite empathy from us.

gonna go with bullshit on that. the point of training is to know how to act in situations before they come up -- to know the right decision when things actually happen.

that and it's a hard sell that a lot of them aren't acting out the decisions they've already made, that they've been waiting to enact.

And yet, citizenry are expected to always have better self taught training whenever they have to deal with a cop. They arent allowed to fear for the life, they arent allowed to make any mistakes whatsoever.

Cops hanging up you in a case of mistaken identity? Too bad, just roll over and hope you dont die so you can settle later while those psychos remain on the force.

Dumb comparison. And besides in the police academy you can get dq'd for a number or reasons, one being if you fail 2 tests out of the 25 they give, even after those 6 months you're on probation for 2 years.

This, really. I mean I get the conveyance behind the OP, but lawyers have years to go over decisions that everyone has seconds to make.

Still a poor blanket excuse for any given cop's mistake.

Not really?

If you sign a contract or commit fraud or write a poorly written will, that's decisions made with forethought over time.

If a guy has a gun to his wife's head and screams that he is about to pull the trigger and blow her brains out and the cop on scene has a clear shot. He literally only has a few seconds to weigh up what action to take.

Any hesitiation or consideration risks it being too late. What if the guy does shoot his wife while the cop is standing there like a lemon thinking?

What if the cop shoots and the guy's gun ends up not being loaded? Or a toy? or the guy is revealed to have mental disorders?

What if the cop shoots, misses and hits the wife?

What if the cop tries to talk the guy down and succeeds and everyone walks away alive?

If he tries to talk, what should he say?

The cop only has a second to process all of this and act.

That's not true of a guy undercutting his employee's pensions.
