I dont give a fuck that I already paid mine off, there are millions of people who are working poor because of student loans. They should have a better chance at a situation comparable to mine. Sixty years ago you could raise a family buy a house and pay for your kids college on one full time job. Thats the last time having a college degree actually made a noticeable difference for people. I dont give a fuck about anyone who posts graphs and charts and essays from hack economists to try and justify millions of people working themselves to death for scraps. Youre all defending a system that youll never truly benefit from. Working class people have been getting the shit end of the stick for generations while more and more wealth is concentrated within a smaller and smaller group of people. If an entire generation can't afford to buy houses, the market collapses (this also means that the home owners can't sell their houses). If enough people are effectively barred from parenthood, it's going to make our population extremely top heavy and place a tremendous burden on our children's generation (late gen z and what comes after them). When you have to pay $500/month, you spend less on "luxuries" like entertainment (movies, books, concerts, art, etc.), services (hair stylists, nail salons, personal trainers, lawn care, etc.), and goods (restaurants, clothes, food, etc.). These are all things that put money into the pockets of other people, who in turn spend it on other things, and keep the economy going. Without disposable income, soon almost no one will be able to make a living. So, for the average student loan debt of 30k, 10k isn't "nothing" but it's not enough to make a difference and free up enough income to stimulate the economy. 50k covers the average and hopefully chips away at the debts of the people who owe a lot more. Also, wrt the argument that "why should we forgive debt if this will just happen again?" Congratulations, you've almost got it. This would be step one.
