Not really anime, I think they just wanted a more "typical" futuristic alien race.

They didn't at first because they came across as too good and clean and sparkly and they where boring.

Fluff-wise, they are an authoritarian race with a strict caste system that mind controls the bulk of its race through pheromones. And non-tau are slaves. I'd say the fit in 40k.
This is also a setting were a race of psychic fungus people builds things from scrap that shouldn't even function (and don't, in the hands of other races) but everything works like they think it should work just because they believe it. --- NNID: MisterNoOne | PSN: The_Mistled ... Lore wise, they fit pretty damn well into the WH40K. Aesthetically, eh.... They do stand out compared to the other races, that is for sure.
