Or anyone else that would like to seriously weigh in on the subject. What age did you have the sex talk with your kids, or what age do you think it is appropriate to have the conversation? What age did your parents have it with you?

Never had the talk. Kids are too young. I'd say 13

The reason I ask, is because my son is 7 and my daughter is 5. My wife went into our son's room because they were both still awake and she wanted them to go to sleep. Well when she went in there they were both naked(which isn't so much of a big deal to us because we are trying to make sure they grow up being comfortable with their bodies and knowing that nudity is natural and there is nothing wrong with it,) but apparently my son had come up with a game that involved them touching each others genitals and sniffing each other's butts.(This is the part that I feel needs to be addressed, and I'm not 100% sure how to address it.)

My parents did it at 7 and I thought that was pretty reasonable. They were pretty open about it and I never developed a secret curiosity because of that

I feel like there are levels to the conversation that should be built on. First its about appropriateness and consent to being touched before it moves on to anything actually about sex.

Well we have been doing our best to instill an awareness of consent just in general for our kids. Our kids know that the only adults that are allowed to touch their privates are their doctor or mom and dad, and even then there will be a very good reason for it at the time. I suppose the biggest thing we have not really touched on is appropriateness and what is or isn't appropriate.

But it sounds like they already have a good basis for understanding appropriateness since youve taught them about who should be touching their genitals. You can definitely build up from that.

I think a lot of parents get lost in fear at the idea of the talk and miss out on the hundreds of smaller conversations that will make the talk easier once its necessary.
