On paper I should dislike this show

But I've watched 5 episodes in the last two days.

I can't get enough of it.

I didn't watch the movie though, I don't know if it was good or not but I had already moved on.

Yeah, it's oddly engaging. I think it comes down to the actors and pacing.

It's great because of the characters. Taken out of context, explaining different plots to people it would sound downright idiotic at times, but Branson alone could carry a show.

The movie was pretty good, too, for anyone who hasn't seen it yet (I saw it when it was on HBO Max, may still be there).

Well on paper I usually like period pieces, the costumes and designs and all of that stuff. But I've never watched Downtown Abbey.

Is it any good? Just yesterday I happened to see a few second clip from a later season but didn't really get a good impression on whether I'd like it or not

Is it comedic, is it serious? How is it tonally?

It is primarily a drama but there is plenty of humor from the characters and dialogue. Maggie Smith is the funniest person on the show imo.

Just make sure you watch the OG series tc. The revival Upstairs Downstairs wasn't kinda meh. Especially with Downton Abbey surpassing the revival in pretty much everything.

I used to love Branson but toward the end I was like "Ehh...I still like you but....ehhh"

At times it's funnier than most of it's comedy contemporaries. And at times it's more shocking/deadly than friggin prime Game of Thrones.

Co-sign but that goes without saying.
I will give honorable mentions to Mr. Carson, Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Patmore, Isobel Crawley might be second funniest overall though. Or maybe Robert Crawley when he gets especially confused in a British way.
