The stories aren't compelling enough to disguise the lack of meaningful decisions or strategy in the gameplay. The old GBA era Fire Emblem games had the typical bland medieval fantasy JRPG story, but there was a good amount of depth to the gameplay. Stuff like Golden Sun never appealed to me because it had the normal JRPG combat which boils down to pick the best attack.

I think if someone reskinned a JRPG into a setting I actually find interesting, I'd probably enjoy myself. A JRPG set in the Godfather or Marvel universe could probably keep me invested.

there is very little actual roleplaying, i cant think of a jrpg ive played where there was actual meaningful player choice

There have been entire series of open world JRPGs since at least the NES era. Metal Max comes to mind first. There is also the Romancing SaGa series which recently got some remakes. Not to mentioned various individual titles throughout the years. If you want onen world JRPGs with lots of choices they exist.

I also find it funny that Western fans start making weird exceptions and rules to say the Souls games aren't Japanese RPGs. They also completely ignore From Software's previous King's Field and Shadowtower games so they don't need to admit they had been making these games since the PS1 era.

You have to embrace the stupid to get invested in jrpg stories. Persona 5 helped me with that. After you come to accept how stupid it is it's a lot more enjoyable

I've been interested in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but I don't have a Switch right now.

I've also heard of the Disgaea series, but the high damage output stuff seems pretty intimidating, lol.

If you have any interest in Fire Emblem you should definitely put Genealogy of the Holy War on your radar. One of my favorite video game stories, not just in Fire Emblem, but of all time.

Also a little off-topic but I've been meaning to ask, are you boxington? Haven't seen that guy post in a while and I swear you have a similar posting style and similar taste in games, it's driving me a little crazy tbh.

I'd recommend Fire Emblem Seisen no keifu/Geneology of the Holy war. That's my favorite. Also Shining Force ii is really fun and easy to get into. Neither of those require grinding. I think Disgaea requires a lot though.
thanks for the recs.

I've been playing, and enjoying, tactical WRPGs this gen after not playing them before, so I feel like I'd probably enjoy tactical JRPGs more than the traditional stuff if I gave them a chance.
