Damn its a good time for fantasy releases. Stormlight 4 is coming out, and I still haven't read the new Joe Abercrombie book, and now this.

tbh, I've been slacking when it comes to fantasy.

I might look further into it after this.

I didn't really pay attention to the first one, but since I'm reading the second one on my Kindle app, the cover pops up before going back to my last read page, so I've been noticing it more

I kinda like the direction the story's taking in the last book, Tau became the greatest warrior in the queendom (matriarchal society) because he learned how to enter that world's equivalent of hell from his girlfriend and practice fighting against demons. the demons didn't die, like, if he attacked one, it would heal no matter the injury, and Tau would basically "die" against them, which sent him back to his body (kinda like an astral thing). and since time moved a lot more quickly in that reality, he could train in that way multiple times a night

anyway, now he's bringing his sword brothers into the mix since they need to enter that hell to aid them in an upcoming battle, and it'll give them an edge - for more background, magic, controlling dragons, etc. come from that hell, and the gifted (women with special abilities) are able to draw from it. basically, anyone can draw from it, but the gifted can shroud their presence from the demons for a certain amount of time while the average person can't, and while being "killed" by a demon won't really kill you, you'll face real damage and death if you try to draw power as a normal person since you'll be in corporeal form

in the last book, Tau's childhood friend, who's part of a higher caste, as part of a heroic act, sacrificed himself to take on a dragon's attack. and while he survived, he was horribly burned and crippled

in this book, after Tau sits by his bedside, giving basically a recap of the events of the first book, he reveals to his friend that he killed his brother by accident. the friend can't really talk or communicate, but he basically starts hating Tau from there on, but it's not something that Tau picks up

anyway, after a failed trip to "hell", where he tries to get his guys acclimated to the experience, one snaps and accidentally kills another and then himself after mistakenly believing that he's still in hell

in a desperate attempt, he figures out that his childhood friend might be able to serve a purpose in that capacity, and trains him to enter hell. his friend, while in hell, is uninjured and doesn't wanna go back to the real world since he's in constant pain and agony, but Tau's able to convince him

I'm thinking that the friend's going to be a major antagonist once he starts using that all to his advantage
