But Dandangronpa seems to me a smidgen more like Phoenix Wright where you occasionally do.... anything

Are they any good? I mean, I don't mind just waiting for the Grumps to finish the series so ya

They're all great games. If you're gonna play them, don't look up anything related to it on the Internet. It's easy as shit to get spoiled and they're way better when you don't know what's gonna happen.

Given what I seen in the Grumps doing the prologue and the first bit of Chapter 1 as well as structured foreshadowing in the beginning my first guess would be that YOU are the killer and you're the ultimate liar, lying even to the player

but that would be really silly... although it would be cool if there was some randomization involved similar to how the Clocktower games work

visual novels shouldn't be approached like games imo

they are literally novels with pictures and music and sometimes voices at their core

I talk to all the NPCs, but I do it fast.... they might have an event flag attached to them

If ultimately you play games for gameplay and arent too big on the characters themselves then id say its a safe watch. The only big difference would be which characters get hung out with and then whoever you watch thinking of things you might not have on your own. At least for the first game. Know nothing of the others.

As for what you "do"....theres really only point and click type stuff outside of the trials without much of note being all that obscure or complicated. The trials themselves have 3 minigame type things - You figure out the right evidence point and shoot it at contradictory statements, hangman esque game, and then a short rhythm game. All 3 linked to the same health bar which causes failure of the trial when fully depleted.

Funny you mention that, the Zero Escape Series (999 and sequels), the Phoenix Wright series, and the Danganronpa series are three of my favorite VNs series. With PW as my second favorite series game series, and Danganronpa as my third. Zelda is obviously first. Anyway, it pretty similar to PW. But it has more games to do during the cases...

If you play the PC version, you can use a mouse to advance the text and select dialogue options. And the mouse can do most things in the trials.

Danganronpa games are more involved than Phoenix Wright. During trials you not only have to look for contradictions, but you have to do some minigames as well. They are way better than Phoenix Wright in my opinion.

Ok, I didn't notice it in the Grumps video, but when Makoto is standing outside the school in the prologue and the camera pans (well, scrolls) down I get massive vertigo... I had this problem in Doom Eternal as well, but only when looking up or down.

Is it possible to have only "vertical" motion sickness?

her accent is really nice, and I normally would be all over her (figuratively), but I really like Hino... and Junko was unexpectedly sincere

...I'm on Chapter 2 now, still cold as ice - but there were a couple things that might have me moving towards room temperature

namely who I coincidentally spent my Free Time with ... making me wonder if there were alternate outcomes, or at least alternate skill unlocks.

Plus there was some intriguing foreshadowing from Monokuma... and I have thoughts of my own (like if previous classes of this school also went though the same thing, since this school has been around for a LONG time)

You didn't catch any feels in chapter 2? One of my favorite moments was Kiyotaka furiously trying to defend his new friend, while Mondo eventually fell silent, hanging on to his last remaining shred of honor.

Not any strong feels - just the regular 'this is a thing that is happening' I usually have...

But, hey, I don't feel a lot of things in general... actually, some things in the game that probably weren't meant to be important moments had more impact.

Side note, I was slightly offended that the answer to one of the Hangmans was Schizo when that's not related to DID and Schizo is what I have

As an aside: The game has been very blunt with its foreshadowing... but I'm in the Chapter 6 trial and, well, Monokuma just said something that is either really STUPID or is one of the most clever lines of dialogue I've ever seen

So, while I'm still playing... here's my FIRST thought of what the ending might be

All of us are the Ultimate Despair and the game is a test to see if erasing memories is enough to keep killers from killing

I think in the first game, chapter 2 and 4 were where I caught feels. In the second game, it was definitely chapter 4 and 5 (The blackened in those cases were my favorite characters). I still cry when I watch those. In the third game, I cried at some point during case 1, 3, 4, & 5. That being said, chapter 2s blackened was a character I liked a lot... But the third game hit hard...

It's over~! But I can do School Mode... I do have like 400 Monokoins, even though I put murder on hold to play gachapon.

The ending wasn't as satisfying as the setup and it felt like there were some unfinished angles... but that could be relationship status kinda content

I don't wanna say I didn't like the story, but, well, take Phoenix Wright 1 as an example - I was invested in Mia Fey and effected almost immediately, and the 2nd game gave me final chapter impetus/concern.

As for other VNs, Chuusotsu Time after Time (which is still SOMEHOW my favourite VN even though it's really dumb) got me really invested in the characters since the story was so absurd that as the characters start to like each other you start to like them in turn (weirdly an advantage of narrative that is taken away when you have a choice of characters to spend time with) and there's a delightfully unexpected WHAM at the end, which is something a VN needs to only use at the right moment or it loses meaning.

Well, ok, unless you count Long Live the Queen as a VN... that one would be my favourite; it has EVERYTHING

....

I'm old, though; but I don't think I'm entirely heartless... I just think it's different things that move me, like i'm some sort of alien. I found Hajime no Ippo to be absolutely thrilling, but Baki to be hella-stupid; even if they run very similar stories. ... ... side note, Sakura did remind me of Baki's plot a lot but I don't know when they came out.

Well, I am 37.

And I don't wanna say I didn't like the story, but that's just the thing - I wouldn't have gained anything playing it for myself compared to watching a let's play.

The characters were certainly likable and unlikeable in the right ways.

Its different for me. Mainly for a few reasons. One reason is I love games like this. And playing games like this. And figuring stuff out. I cant do that watching. Plus, sometimes, people pick weird options. The second is getting to know the characters. And learning about them while playing. And caring for them because you know about them. And all the twists and turns along the way... Like, I liked different characters than other people. So, even if they didnt get to know the characters I liked, I got to know them...
