some background - a while back, Batman sat in this high tech throne thing that could answer any question, and when he asked who the Joker really was, it turned out that there were three Jokers.

then in the Three Jokers storyline, they're revealed - the Clown, the Comedian, and the Criminal, and their goal is to create a superior Joker.

I've only read/watched summaries, but first they tried to make Jason Todd into that Joker, but it didn't work out, and Jason Todd killed the Clown.

in the final issue, they tried to turn Joe Chill (the dude who killed Bruce's parents) into that Joker, but along the way it's revealed that he's repentant for killing the Waynes, and before he can be dropped in the vat of chemicals to turn him into a Joker by the Criminal, Batman saves him, and as the Criminal is about to kill himself, Batman, and Joe Chill in a suicide attack, the Comedian kills him.

it's revealed that the Comedian's goal was to heal Bruce (yea, he knows Bruce Wayne is Batman and the identities of Red Hood & Batgirl, but doesn't care and doesn't reveal them because Bruce might quit/disappear otherwise) of his trauma by having him forgive Joe Chill so that the Joker will be his singular focus from now on, and that he never cared about the whole superior Joker thing like the other two did.

lastly, it's also revealed that Batman always knew Joker's name, and it's implied that The Killing Joke is his real background story.

that's what I got from the video, at least.

yea, but they apparently have different methods and motivations, and the Criminal is the only one who doesn't laugh or smile since it causes him pain

maybe since I followed a secondary source, I explained things as poorly as possible, but the storyline doesn't sound as interesting as I hoped it would be

yea, they're different people.

seems like one of the Jokers was the original, as the Comedian implied, and the original created the other two. idk what methods he used, but the vat of chemicals turns people insane, iirc, so that was a factor.

and while we might not know exactly who the original is, the guy who made the video believes that it's the Comedian, and idk if he was saying that the Killing Joke is the Comedian's backstory, the original Joker's, or if the two are one and the same.

They've been doing some dumb shit with Joker the past few years. Before this 3 Jokers thing, they were playing with the idea that Joker was an immortal being who has been causing chaos for centuries. Before that, he cut his own face off for...reasons?

New 52 was just a questionable time for DC.

See, this feels like it had potential to be an interesting thing. Like, I could get into a story about Joker impersonators or even a Joker with a more fractured psyche, but this 3 Jokers thing seems pretty out there.

Joker has been wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy overdone now but DC is so creatively bankrupt they don't know what to do with Batman's arch enemies or even make new ones.

I love DC for their characters, but they have made some questionable choices. I hate how they handled Superman and his son.

oh yea, the Clown Joker was the one who killed Jason Todd, and Jason killed him back

and the Comedian Joker, the one from The Killing Joke, his wife and kid survived, and I guess their deaths were faked and Batman didn't reveal Joker's name partly to protect them, or something like that

I don't think that the identities for the Clown or Criminal are revealed, but since it looks like The Killing Joke is the Comedian's canon background, but idk if his real name is ever said in that

Damn lol I felt like the whole interest in that Batman throne reveal was the identity/identities of Joker. Not that there were 3 of them smh.

My understanding is that Joker (the Comedian?) went mad because his wife and child supposedly died in KJ. But they didn't die and Batman hid that from the Joker. So Batman is entirely complicit, even more so than in the past, in this dude's insanity?

Basically, for Marvel and DC, all you have to do is keep in mind when a story took place relative to the "events" which are played out in the limited comic series, such as Secret Wars or Infinity Gauntlet for Marvel, just like you would with real life history (e.g., an event took place between the two World Wars versus an event happening in between the U.S. Civil War and the First World War). For DC, they essentially rebooted their continuity beginning in 1986 when the Crisis on Infinite Earths series finished and rebooted it again after the Flashpoint series in 2011. So there's somewhat of a soft beginning and soft ending to that continuity. In 2016, because people in real life were dissatisfied with the direction of the comics, they used the smaller "Rebirth" event to restore the memories of many characters of things that happened prior to Flashpoint and bring back characters that were absent from the newer continuity.

tl;dr: Due to soft reboots, superhero comics are not as reliant as you would think on past stories, typically you can just buy whatever looks interesting and won't have a hard time following what's happening, but you can find out when different comics occur by quickly looking up how many months the comic was released before or after one of the "event" series began or ended.

Is it not a plot hole that he knows the identity of what he thinks is the only Joker, but he also asks the god-chair who the Joker is?

people made the point that he was testing out the chair's accuracy, like by asking about who killed his parents (something we already knew he knew), and asking about the Joker was just a continuation of that

the three Jokers thing was likely something he didn't know, though
