Wage gap is real. However, the causes are more complex and more subtle than "businesses just choose to pay men more money".

tbh it can be presented pretty uncomplexly:

having a child destroys your career if you're a woman, and some companies are afraid you're gonna do it so they undervalue you in advance

That's a big piece of it. Another contributing factor is the subjects we expect boys to do well in vs. the ones we expect girls to do well in, and then there are various cultural biases, and systemic biases, and so on.
