We have two doors, an entrance door and an exit door. The front door was locked, so rather than read our hours sign, he approached the window and motions me "are you open"

I tried to give him some hand signals to say we aren't, but he keeps on standing there. So, i go outside and say "sorry sir, this store closed at 6 tonight" and he says with a smile on his face "okay, thanks" and proceeds to attempt to walk in. I tell him again, "sorry, we are closed. we closed at 6"

"YOU CLOSED AT 6, SINCE WHEN?"

Well, on monday and tuesday the store has closed at 7 for basically as long as i've been drinking(almost 10 years), and now we are reduced an hour because of covid. I tell him the store 3 miles down the road is open until 8, but he just walked off, frustrated.

So, folks, if the entrace door to a store is locked, look for the sign on that same door saying what the hours are, and if you are too late, leave. If the sign says we should be open, then I could see why you'd attempt to see whats up. Like one time our second entrace door(one door, a small vestibule, and a second door) broke off the hinge, so we locked the door and instructed people to come inside through the exit.

When I worked retail I took to closing the metal security grate immediately after closing time, even though I'd have to open it again to leave. People won't bother you if they can see the store is secured.

sometimes if I feel like idiots like this will be a problem I turn off most of the lights and work in semi-darkness and blast music.

If they think that I can conduct business with the general public with 80% of the lights off and hardcore punk blaring from the sound system....i don't know. Though if I worked at a Hot Topic that may be business as usual.

People are staggeringly entitled. I once had a guy wait 10 minutes because I locked the door when we closed and went off to try ushering customers to the register, just so he could cuss me out for not letting him in when I didn't even know he was there. So fucking entitled, he deserved to show up 5 minutes after we closed and be let in because he "needed" something for work tomorrow and I just deserved to be cussed out.

Never been cussed out as much in my life as I have since covid started.

Unfortunately we have after hours emergency service. They can still get work done, it just costs a lot more
