maybe its natures way of population control and self repair.

didnt the ozone layer fix itself because for a period in this year a good chunk of factories closed down so there wasnt as much polution

Same reason bacteria, parasites, carnivorous creatures, opportunistic creatures exist...

They all keep each other in check to prevent one another from being "overly populated"

I'm not sure that fits. With an std, there isn't an issue with airborne transmission. There's also consent to the risk of infection. This virus infects people without regard to consent or best practices on their part

there are illnesses that humanity has had for centuries (or longer), and by this point, we have vaccines or other means of treating them. but if they were didn't, they would be a major issue.

but then there are new illnesses that we're still learning about and we currently don't have any vaccines or medicines for (at least not anything yet released to the public)

Smallpox was a huge problem. It was basically wiped out. Polio too. Measles was too, but the antivax movement has brought it back. People should be free to have their own beliefs, but not at the expense of others. We're all in it together, without everyone working together, we're only going to regress further
