A public option would inevitably fail. Government programs should not be made to compete with private companies. The public option will either be undercut by private insurance through job benefits, or it will be severely underfunded with too little people paying into it. Healthcare should be the publicly funded default and private insurance should be extra for the people that can afford it.

Problem is that with not enough funding (especially when Republicans get their greasy fingers in it), it'll eventually die out and private insurance will quickly return to the shit practices that are currently plaguing us today.

It also doesn't eliminate the issues with drug prices, networks, and the uninsured. The individual mandate is going to be fought in the courts for decades. If you just fund healthcare through taxes instead, you avoid all of these issues.

Bottom line is that healthcare, like education or the postal service, should not be handled like a business. It's a public service and should be treated/funded like one.

Everyone gets to go to a public school or use their local post office. No extra charges or strings attached. If you want to send your kid to a private school or use UPS for extra money, then you have the option, but you still pay taxes that fund your district and pay government employees like mailmen.

That's exactly how healthcare should work.

Wrong. A/B are the public option. A Medicare Advantage Plan takes over your Medicare insurance, and is offered through Private insurance companies. A supplement is a secondary plan to Medicare A/B.

Medicare part a is premium free as long as you contributed 10nyears worth of social security taxes towards it. Other wise it's like $455ish month. Part B on average is 144.60.

Turns out this is a 2018 development that happened after my time.

But it's still not a real public option. You must still meet the eligiblity requirements of part A. You cannot just buy it like you can with the ACA or a theoretical public ACA option.
