All the idiot conservatives including Trump say the same thing all the time. They mention all the homeless and the ghetto areas with trash but never mention the nice areas, and never mention the poor red states like Mississippi.

Same trick from their aybook. Its getting old.

In New York's case a lot of it is mostly the city, but a lot of them are moving out of state. California has been shedding people for years even before the pandemic and the wildfires, and these are just some of the reasons why.

* High taxes, minimum wages, cost of living, and business regulations
* Poor zoning regulation leading to real estate crisis
* Homeless increase in CA was so high that it resulted in a net gain for the U.S. in spite of most states decreasing. https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/articles/2019-12-26/homelessness-spike-in-california-causes-national-rise-for-third-year-in-a-row
* Lax drug policies leads to a lot of needles and dead bodies in the streets
* Environmental policies focusing on becoming carbon neutral by 2040 caused them to neglect their existing infrastructure. Many fires were caused by sparking power lines, some of which are 50 years old. That's why they started shutting off power for thousands of residents.
* Also contributing to the fires is California's recent ban on logging and controlled burning of brush and dead trees in order to regulate the size and areas of their forests, as they'd been doing for decades to curb fires. Why? Because it wasn't "environmentally friendly." Jerry Brown tried to relax logging restrictions in 2018 but it was too little too late and Newsom is pushing back. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/environment/sd-me-timeline-wildfire-logging-20181125-story.html

So the last two seem more direct cause and effect (people left because of the forest fires), but the first four are broad generalizations? For example, I've heard a lot of people in CA say the high taxes/cost of living is offset by higher wages and increased social services. Or to take your second point, is poor zoning regulation the only thing that led to a real estate crisis? Or even the biggest factor?

Your first posts was "Because A (Democrats got to pass everything), B (negative things) happened, which led to people wanting to leave the stat". I'm not disputing them leaving, I'm asking you to show proof of causation between A and B.

I believe prop 47 is what I was referring to. In 2014 it decriminalized drug offenses from felonies to misdemeanors as an effort to reduce prison population. The downside is that it made it easier to get these drugs and violent crime started to increase afterwards. Some suspect it fueled the homeless epidemic as well.

I wasn't listing those as generalizations, these are all reasons that different people or businesses had for leaving California for other states. Higher wages and increased social services are necessary just to be able to live in California because of how expensive it is. The homeless crisis is not just a motivator for the homeless, but also for the people who live around them. In San Francisco people have complained about tents lining every street from end to end, as well as human feces everywhere, heroin needles, and the occasional OD'd corpse. The real estate crisis is complex and has happened over many years, but I think this article does a decent job of explaining it.

https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2019-california-housing-crisis/

Like I said, people have been leaving California for years, it's just the fires now were the final straw. The worst part is that governor Newsom thinks he can point fingers and say "aha! See? Climate change!" as if that lets him off the hook for actually doing anything to prevent the fires. Climate change may have been a contributing factor in the dry season, but California has been dealing with this problem long before global warming was even a thing. It's basically a desert state. The fact is many of these fires were preventable, climate change or no climate change, and Newsom is trying to prop this up as an environmental talking point rather than taking any responsibility for stopping them.

Friendly reminder that people from CA are some the least likely to move out of their state and Americans in general are moving at the lowest rates since we started tracking such data.

With 40 million people however even a small share of people moving seems like an "exodus" to people who don't understand statistics.

https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/heatherknight/article/Two-deaths-a-day-S-F-drug-overdoses-fueled-by-15635199.php

The coronavirus pandemic pushed the homelessness crisis that has always existed in San Francisco to a level unseen in recent history, with unhoused individuals left with no other option than to live on the streets. The number of tents increased throughout the city by 71% in the historically underserved, low-income neighborhood of the Tenderloin, the number exploded by 258%.

Most of the 48 deaths occurred outdoors, and more in the Tenderloin than any other part of the city, according to the department of public health.

Fentanyl
The data shows the number of fentanyl overdoses tripled from 2016 through the first six months of 2019.
2016 22 deaths (double the # in 2015)
2017 36 deaths
2018 89 deaths
2019 69 deaths (first 6 months)
Methamphetamine
2015 81 deaths
2016 88 deaths
2017 99 deaths
2018 126 deaths
2016 112 deaths (first 6 months)
Overdose overall
2017 222 deaths
2018 259 deaths
2019 182 deaths (first 6 months)
https://www.kron4.com/san-francisco-homelessness/data-shows-drastic-increase-in-fentanyl-overdose-deaths-in-san-francisco/

In 2018, the city recorded 259 overdose deaths; 222 were recorded in 2017.
San Francisco is now on pace to suffer 675+ overdose deaths in 2020. And, again, this is only the preliminary data.
https://missionlocal.org/2020/10/overdose-fentanyl-san-francisco-450/

As the Chronicle reported earlier this month, following a new report from the city's Department of Public Health, there were 441 overdose deaths in San Francisco in 2019 more than one per day. That represents a 70-percent leap over the previous year, and more than half of the deaths in 2019 were related to fentanyl.

Dr. Phillip Coffin, the health departments director of substance use research and the author of the recent report, believes that the leap in OD deaths this year will be even higher than 70 percent.

You do know that 2016 was when they banned schedule 1 and 2 analogs (rcs) along with other drug related restrictions created both federal and local forcing people to do harder drugs like fentanyl, right?

Last time I checked, no one is "forced" to do any type of drug, especially if the drug is illegal and the person is homeless and has no money. Wait, how come I'm the only one who has to provide sources for things? Everything I've said has been discussed so many times on this board it's pretty much common knowledge by now.
