I went twice since they opened.

I had the entire theater to myself for the Akira Remaster.
Which was pretty weird having the whole theater to yourself, but cool at the same time.

I would maybe do so alone for a movie I really wanted to see if I was sure the theater would be very sparse and there were low covid rates in the area, but the majority of the movies I would see in a theater would typically be when I went home with my dad anyway, and I certainly wouldn't be willing to put him at risk.

I saw Tenet with my brother and...only my brother. No one else was in the entire theater. But it wasn't until he told me he already saw it in an empty theater I was comfortable going.

Yeah I have a similar situation, I work in a kitchen and if I get it, it'll most likely be there.

Plus the theaters honestly are surprisingly safe given just how empty they are. In 7 trips, there was probably like 12 total people other than me. Several times I was completely alone in the theater

It's so weird how "movies" are like the one thing America seems to have unanimously decided to be terrible for you in a pandemic. There are people who are scared to go to a movie theater but who have no problem going to a high school football game, eating together outside, and going to school.

A mostly empty theater where you keep your mask on is far safer than any of those situations, even if they are outside.

A mostly empty theater where you keep your mask on is far safer than any of those situations, even if they are outside.

I work at a restaurant and arcade franchise and we are totally packed every weekend. It's fucking insane. I hate every single person who comes here

This feels like a bit of a reach.

You know the more you tell people "oh they're fine, they're always mostly empty now", you're increasing the amount of people being in there because more people are going under the assumption they'll be mostly empty and in turn starting to make that untrue

what else have people seemingly stopped doing? as far as I can tell people are back to doing everything they did before the pandemic: bars, shopping, even theme parks. granted, it's not like there's been great movies out there, but still.

The thing is that most decent people consider the people doing those things to be terrible as well, those things are just wat more common in general.

Like, everyone who goes to a restaurant sucks. Straight up.

At this point I enjoy watching movies at home significantly more than going to the theater, so I'm not crazy about paying a premium for an inferior experience even outside of the whole "disease ravaging the country" thing.

People saying they've gone to largely empty theaters (and sometimes completely empty aside from them) suggests that most people are still staying away.

Although the lack of anything worth seeing is probably a contributing factor as well.

I think the use of the word "unanimously" is...again, a bit of a reach.

Like...more people probably still go to restaurants than movies, but go interview any random restaurant owner about how their business is doing in 2020 compared to 2019.

Business for movies is down, but...they're still open (in many cases) so the whole point can just be thrown out imo

No, but the only theaters near me are either too gross to go to under normal circumstances, or too expensive for any movie that'll be out any time in the next couple years, and I'm not much of a theater person to begin with.

But still, I'm not denying that people don't go to movies, but to say "Americans unanimously agree movies are bad" when there are movie theaters open playing movies is just...last time, I swear, a bit of a reach

If you want to stereotype americans, go for it! But this one just doesn't make sense

What do you suppose the restaurant:cinema ratio is in the US? Conservatively, maybe 100:1? I figure it's bigger than that. Being the only person at a restaurant isn't equivalent to being the only person at a movie

Ironically restaurants are a lot riskier (at least if indoors) since you and other people won't have masks on while eating and people will typically be talking!

To be fair, Akira Remaster was at 4:50 on a Friday. Really odd time and an odd movie. Kids aren't interested in old animes and adults that would be aren't out of work.

And the week before when I saw BIll and Ted, it was much more filled. But everyone was spaced. They have a lot of seats taped off and some entire rows closed. It was a little overboard IMO.

Also, I live is a small city of 100-200k depending on what you call is part of the area.

No the store is quite low risk. You're not within six feet of any given person for more than like ten seconds at a time besides at checkout, whereas for a movie you're near the same people for a few hours (which gives aerosols time to build up). Thankfully in neither case should there be much talking and there should be masks.
