Current Events > I still get really immersed into Pokémon games and I don't get it

Im 31 years old. Ive played every Pokemon game except Black and White. Every time I play a new game that comes out, I get completely immersed in it. I see myself in the protagonist trying to be the champion like Im a kid again. The stories and methods are almost always the same. The games story is very kid like but I still get into it.

Its weird. I dont get why I still enjoy it. I just started Pokmon Shield for the first time and this is where these emotions are coming from

Im a boy and I see myself in my trainer so I picked the boy trainer. I usually pick the girl trainer after several play throughs.

That was me during the first 3 gens but I got burnt out on it after that. I picked up gen 5 and I just couldn't get immersed like I used to.

Playing through Pokemon Red for the first time was one of the best experiences of my life.

ETA: When I talk about immersion I'm not talking about story. I just mean addicted af.

Most people do, its because Pokemon was likely a very positive and enjoyable experience. Almost everyone that plays them can say that the game succeeds in making them feel the same way as the first time they played.

I dont know why but unlike actual drugs where your chasing the dragon the pokemon games do manage to recapture that feeling each time.

Everyone I know has that and at 33 I just roll with it as do many others.

I get completely absorbed into things in that way, but only if they have a story. Or the concept is something interesting to me. I'll probably play one of the new pokemons at some point cuz i cant think of much else on the switch, but im not super into the idea of enslaving animals and making them fight each other lol

last one i played was ruby

I lost it after gold and silver. XY was good though.

I got super immersed in silver/gold because the world was so huge and it had a day and night cycle and shit. Never felt that way in any of the other Pokemon games

Same, 27 here. I personally enjoyed Sw/Sh but I can see where people would get critical of the series at this point (or even before now because I know everything since X/Y has had its critics).

Im starting to catch up on Switch games. Just finished Breath of the Wild. I started Pokmon. I downloaded Mario All Stars since the only one I played was Mario 64 and it was a limited of time. Ill probably play the New Fire Emblem game before that though. Nintendo has so many great games. Im sure I have so many more to play. That is just the top of my head

I was basically obsessed as a kid, so I don't get to that point, but I still got an easy hundred hours into Pokemon Sword, even if I'd place it at the bottom of my list.

I can still pick up one of the older games and just get completely enamoured though, so that's a plus.

The novelty wore off after Gen 2 for me, as the gameplay is so monotonous, repetitive, boring and unfulfilling. I was hoping Sword and Shield would bring some welcome change, but of course not.

I've mostly been invested in hax. There are a lot out there that are generic or don't do much but every once in a while one comes out that just wows you with how dedicated that hacker was in making it.

I'm the exact same way, even though the girl trainer always has a much better design.

Yeah you can play nearly all DS games on the New/OG 3DS.

Black/White and Black/White 2 are the only other direct sequel beside the Gen 2 games.

Probably because the games are so relatively simple and formulaic but in a way thats pretty well done.

They can get tiring if you go from gen to gen though, especially if you also go for things like Dex completions or competitive. The changes from gen to gen can be pretty contentious, especially if one gen did something you really liked just for the next to drop it.

For instance with the most recent games (Sword/Shield and the Lets Go games) the fact that not all Pokemon are available even if transferred from previous games is a bummer and while new DLC for SS is remedying that, theres still a substantive list of mons that still cant even be transferred into SS.

It is a fun easy game I like to relax to, and then get back into the SMT.

The severe lack of mons in Sword/Shield is being remedied though, slowly but it is being addressed.
