Biden and Kamala may as well be 2000 Republicans and Trump is just far right garbage. True left candidates have been swallowed up by this need to have centrist representatives because the Republicans under Trump have become more right than ever

he was a fair bit more conservative than obama during the 2008 campaign and generally has presented himself as a centrist

at least he isn't proposing early compromise with a republican-stuffed cabinet though

i think sauceje's point holds there too

biden was 'good enough' for core dem voters who basically didn't trust white people (less the activist dems, more the 'undecided' suburban moms of ohio who completely ignore politics until october 31) to vote for someone like sanders

certainly most of the activist portion of the party was not pleased because republicans were going to call him a communist no matter what he said or did

there is a painfully realistic argument in favor of dems operating this way. a lot of americans, especially in the swing states, are basically conservatives but want it sugarcoated. little known fact that almost all of the swing states are more conservative than the nation as a whole, and dems probably have the popular vote for president secured for a very long time now. there's really no reason for any typically blue state not to sign the popular vote interstate compact. lo and behold almost all signatories now are blue states.

trump's refusal to sugarcoat the fascism turns these conservative-in-denial folks off, and a nice milquetoast dem who won't do anything significant (or at least says that while running) is what they'd prefer

I'd argue Gore and Kerry were much lefter candidates compared to the norm back then while Obama was a regression towards the center. Biden is a continuation of that trend

What's the point of bringing it up at the moment then?

People are aware of it, but when the other choice is Trump, something gotta just suck up and push for them to change when you have someone not a disgusting shit stain in power.

Seems like a lot of people here are ok with Biden and will probably go back to ignoring or excusing everything he does once he wins the election. Just because you may be voting for Biden doesn't mean you have to shrug your shoulders and be ok with everything he does.

It's centrist Democrats who have continually enabled Trump's government. They cry and scream about how evil Trump is, but then go about business as usual. They're faced with Trump appointing a justice to the Supreme Court at a time when he is openly implying he won't accept the result of the election(if he loses), and their reaction is to just to shrug and throw up their hands.

Some do, but the majority dont. See: the democratic primaries

I get it, it sucks that our voting system doesnt represent what really should be a separate party very well. But it is untrue to claim that Biden & Harris arent what the majority of the democraric party want today.

The issue with the term leftist in modern use is that there's almost no consensus on what it means, and people deploy it in very very flexible ways.

The truth is, you just need to get your head out of your ass and vote for the candidate that will be able to push policy in the direction you want. Stop paying attention to labels and celebrity politicians.

They suck for sure, and I think it's a worthy conversation for Americans to have when Biden hopefully gets in. For now just feels from my outsider perspective to focus on making sure he DOES get in power so you can work on making them less shit.

I'm not even American and have a dim view of American's "left" as many of them are pretty right from my point of view. I just think better to focus on making sure he gets in power than criticising him and potentially putting people off voting.

Bargaining with capital is not really a leftist strategy in the first place. As long as business owners are allowed to move around freely, they will seek the lowest paid workers to employ. When wages are raised, businesses will move away unless they can increase productivity through automation, or increase the amount of stuff they're selling.

Only with the abolition of wage labour can the plight of the average worker be solved for good.
